Weight Loss
I am new to this site.
My 38 year old sister was just diagnosed last week with Rectal Cancer, Stage 3. I am very concerned about her weight loss. She lost over 20 lbs within the last few months, and she was skinny before she lost the 20. She looks so frail. Did anyone else experience a substantial weight loss prior to diagnosis?

weight loss
Didn't lose weight until after diagnosis. Part of it was on purpose because I radically changed my diet to eat much cleaner, part was because I lost my appetite for awhile after surgery. I got an infection that made me really feel rotten and the thought of food made me nauseous. That lasted for about 4 weeks. I hope your sister can at least maintain the weight she is currently at and find ways to gain some. Eating smaller, more frequent meals may help along with Ensure, Boost or other nutrition type shakes. I know I can no longer eat large meals.
I needed to lose weight and even though I've lost about 35 pounds from my weight at diagnosis, I can still stand to lose at least another 20 pounds or more.

I lost 50 pounds, during the diagnostic process (which was flawed and longer than it should have been), then surgery and now chemo. I was about 35 pounds overweight, so pretty thin, but have had some gains with appetite and food volume.
My best suggestion is to consider ordering Ka'chava. It is a a highly nutritious and protein dense drink. You can add things to it or just drink it as is.. One serving offers 52 grams of protein, plus great superfoods. It goes down light and is easy to digest. I had a Whipple procedure, which scrambled my digestive tract, and it has been an easy way to get calories in. The vanilla flavor is amazing.
It is an uphill battle that she must wage to be successful. I am 63. I am sure she gets discouraged. I looked forward to my 60's as a decade of fun, and it has been a real ordeal so far. Sending both of you my thoughts and care.

I was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer with liver metasteses in late May. Before that, in the preceding two or three months, I lost about 25 pounds. Luckily I had them to spare. Mostly, the weight loss was due to pain from eating so it became an unpleasant experience. Once diagnosed, I quickly had emergency surgery to remove an almost completely obstructed sigmoid colon. Since then, recovering from the surgery (including 12 days in the hospital--11 with no solid food) I've lost another 10 pounds. Some days I'm hungry and eat a lot and some days I have no appetite and "forget" to eat most of the day. I'm also finding it very difficult to eat the prescribed six meals a day. Still trying to find the right foods that are easy and fast to cook, especially for the low energy days.
