5 years ago today---wow, what a day!
Hello everybody! I've been on a little break for the past couple of months. I'm sure the events of this past year contributed to the need for a break.
I just wanted to share that on this day in 2016, I was told by my nephrologist they found a lesion on the lower pole of my right kidney in scans he had ordered for my medullar sponge kidneys. My nephrologist works at our small local hospital and he said he would forward the information to the urology department and that department would be in contact to schedule an appointment. I didn't wait for that call. I reached out to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Mn. The next week I was meeting with Dr. Chow in Rochester and getting baseline scans. The good and bad news from those baselines were that they didn't think any RCC had spread, but they thought I had another primary on my thyroid--what a blow!
Surgery for the RCC was scheduled for August 26, 2016, and surgery for my thyroid was scheduled for September 28, 2016.
Because of a little mix-up, my kidney scans originally scheduled for this past June have been moved to August 18. Praying for continued NED.
I'll keep you posted---

Hey Stub
There's something about this 5 year marker that brings it all back - maybe for those at 10, 15, etc also? I had surgery on 7/27/16 - all this week I've been reliving that time and feeling grateful for how things are now. It's a time to take a big breath and and think, "Here, now." Prayers for your upcoming scans. Take care ~

Prayers that you continue to be NED! I had my radical nephrectomy on 3/11/21 and my first clean scans last month. I love hearing NED years out...it gives me peace of mind!!
My first scan was right after Thanksgiving in 2016. I was a nervous wreck. I'm not going to lie--I still get anxious, but not to the level of my first few scans. I always try to think about the wise words of a former member (Foxhd). His words of advice were to think of scans as precautionary measures. IF they find something, then you've given the doctors an opportunity to treat it. It does help to think of them this way.
I'm sure stage 3 weighs heavily on your mind. Be committed to your scans. I look forward to hearing from you on your 5 year NED status!

Hi, Sandy!
As you know, finding two cancers is a big punch in the gut! Honestly, after I thought about it, I was relieved that my thyroid cancer was a second primary. My story would have been much different had it been metastasis from my RCC.
Hope you continue to stay well, Sandy!
