partial nephrectomy vs. lap. cryoablation, what to choose?

in Kidney Cancer #1

Hello, my surgeon gave me the choice of doing a laparosopic cryoablation or a robotic partial nephrectomy to remove my kidney tumor. Any advice, personal experience or helpful information on what to choose is welcome. What has the least complications or quicker recovery and will preserve more of my kidney function? Thank you.

    What size is your tumor? If you have cryoblation without a biopsy, they can't do a pathology report afterwards to determine the type of cancer, or even if it's actually cancer or a benign growth.

    They also can't establish negative margins if I remember correctly. I was told that ablation is recommended for elderly people who are poor candidates for surgery. The gold standard so to speak is surgery.

    I had the same choice in 2016

    I had the same choice in 2016 for a 1.7 cm lesion.  At the time, the urologic oncologist said statistics for a lesion that size were a cure rate in the mid-90% or so range for ablation and a cure rate of 99%+ for surgery.  I chose the robotic surgery because of the virtual certainty that the procedure would be curative.

    Thanks Bay Area Guy, have decided on robotic partial nephrectomy, it's the only way to be sure after doing lots of comparisons on procedures.

    I've had good luck with surgery. Plus you get a pathology report and know what the tumor was for future treatments. Part of the tumor will be saved for future testing for genetics for any treatments. You might get a biopsy before the ablation if you choose that so you have those things if possible.
