Urgency and bleeding
Hi I am in remission. I finished my last radiation last November and last chemo last October. I go in every 3 months for the exam where I bend over and they look up my anus. The Dr only sees scar tissue said it looks good in my back passage. I have had 2 CT scans with contrast. Everything came back normal. I have symptoms of urgency to have a bowel movement. Sometimes I have the urgency. I get a mucous discharge. I also have small amounts of blood if it's a harder stool or if I have to many bowel movements. It isn't diarrhea. I mentioned it to the Dr but I was told its important to keep taking my fibre and drink lots of water cause the tissue is scar tissue and its always gonna be delicate back there. Is this all normal thst all of you go through after radiation and chemo??? He mentioned about giving me a suppositorie but never did. .. I come out of this confused after my cancer treatments. Never told what's normal or not normal. Sometimes when I sit on my bottom all day My butt hurts probably from the scar tissue. Any advice or what you all have gone through? Thanks

hurt and bleeding
I go through the same thing. I also wonder if this in "The new Normal" I have problems with constipation and bright red blood after a hard bm. My doctor said the same thing, from radiation. I am over two yrars out from treatment. I go next month for my 3rd CT scan. The last two showd No cancer. I hurt after bm's sometimes, more than not. Please let me know how you are doing.

Urgency and bleeding
This is quite normal. It may or may not get better with time. However, YOU ARE HEALED!!! Rather than sit all day, get up and stretch when you can. Move around. Exercise- so super important for for bowl movements and your radiated bones as well. Just keep remembering that, although it's a "pain in the rear", it's not as bad as active cancer. Also, your Dr. should be able to give you a referral to a pelvic floor PT that may be able to help you. Blessings!

Hi I am.doing ok. Have you thought about taking fiber. My surgeon recommended that right away. I take the generic form of Metamucil. I mix it in with 8 oz of milk and I take 2 to 3 rounded teaspoons a day. And drink lots of water! This will help with your bowel movements. Please let me know how you are! And please try that!

Very good advice Ms. Elizabeth Bailey! Pelvic floor PT maybe helpful for multiple reasons (as we age things don't always work as they used to) along with daily walking as exercise. Some of those lingering effects of chemotherapy and radiation can be hard on your bone density even years later. Congrats on your negative scans!

I'm doing ok. I've been taking fiber choice and stool softeners. They seem to help. No bleeding since July. I found out yesterday I have to have my gallbladder remove. UGH

Urgency
I'm so sorry to hear you are going through this - you are not alone. I had 2 treatments of 5FU and 39 radiation treatments. My last treatment was in March. From the radiation I have colitis (told by surgeon my area is "totally fried") and can no longer have fresh fruit, vegetables or dairy products. It causes terrible gas pain that doesn't go away. I also have leakage of a gel like substance and have exactly 10 seconds to make it to the bathroom or I literally crap my pants. I tried the suppositories- but don't use because it caused a burning sensation. I have had my muscles checked (internally - amazing what you get used to) and they are not damaged. I'm going in on Wednesday to my colorectal surgeon who is going to do a PNE. I have to have that device (needle with a wire goes into my nerve) that will tell if it's nerve damage. (Yup - day before Thanksgiving- I am a little freaked). I have found Amazon to be my best friend. Don't know if this will help you, it has helped me: Bidet - huge help- cleans your bum with cool water - less wiping - less irritation. Menstrual Underwear - to me, a godsend! They come in a 3 pack for $17.99. I can attest they work as I was in line in the post office and guess what - in 10 seconds I crapped my pants. The panties held everything in, didn't smell, I grabbed a leakproof pad from my trunk and drove home. I had no leakage to my clothes, the pad or the car seat. Phew. I will update you all concerning the PNE - I'm hoping it is the nerve because there are options then. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! You are in my thoughts and it's nice to know I am not alone

Urgency
So sorry to hear that you are experiencing the side effects after treatment. However, I can attest that things do get better. My treatment for stage 3b anal cancer ended in January, 2017. At first there was a lot of urgency, accidents, bleeding and diet issues. Radiation Oncologist said it would take 18 months for the radiation effects to get better. For me it was more like 2 to 2 and a half years to get back to “normal”. I can finally eat fresh fruits and veggies but steer clear of a lot of fried foods, chocolate, packaged and frozen foods with preservatives and sugary foods. I stilll can have issues on occasion if I don’t take fiber pills and eat things I shouldn’t but not often. The tissues and skin are more delicate at first but get better. Exercise like yoga and even pelvic floor therapy are very helpful to get blood flow to the area and help with scar tissue and pain. Keep faith that things will improve. I can promise that they do.

Hello, I'm doing ok. Still taking fiber in the morning and miralax in the evenings. Seems to be working. I use aquaphor everyday now. Had a sore rear last week.

I am close to 5 years since my chemo radiation treatment, how am I just hearing about menstrual underwear?! Thank you so much for this tip!! Can you tell me which brand you prefer from Amazon, please? I feel as though my "accidents" are becoming more frequent, and I am so frustrated. Happened last night in a restaurant and the short walk to the bathroom felt like an eternity!! UGH! I've also read a tip that taking anti-diarrhea medication every morning regardless could help with accidents.

I completely understand. My daughter suggested them as I was at the end of my patience. At first, I was skeptical until I experienced a terrible bout of diarrhea in public. They have been a lifesaver and have restored my sense of independence. I have had several “Oopsies” out in public. The panties kept everything in without any smell! I always carry a pair of panties and wipes in my purse. The person with me (usually my daughter) states they can’t smell a thing. My 88 year old mother wears them for incontinence both urinary and bowel and has her friends hooked too! Besides the panties, I have been following the FODMAP Diet. It has been a game changer. I had been to Dietitians, Gastroenterologists, Colorectal Surgeons, Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists. “Healthy foods” for me as an example, artichokes, avocados, bananas, etc. All the food they tell you is good for digestion. It is amazing food I ate labeled as “good” for one, is a red light for another. For me, I have cut out gluten and no longer have terrible gas pain. I only eat a non-ripe banana, etc. they have a simple App: Monash University Fodmap Diet (1 time purchase $8.00). The App is a traffic light with measurements of green, amber & red. It was hard at first, but the rewards have been amazing for me! I hope I have helped you. Attached below are the screenshots for panties and diet. Wishing you well!
