Feeding Tube Granulation Tissue-Issue

Has anyone on here had a feeding tube and had tissue form underneath it where it meets your body and enters. Right where the tube is the shape of a disc against the body. It is usually pink to red and just looks like a layer of skin. It is the area trying to heal from the foreign item in your body, the feeding tube. I am told this is called granulation tissue or hyper-granulation tissue. If so how did you deal with it?

    FT for life, I was told to wash w/soap & water daily, and DO NOT use gauze or anything to cover- so the skin can breathe. I use ear Q-tips. Had a FT for 17 months back in 2009, and the current one since 8/6/19 and no issues. Brownish crusts form around the tube beneath the disc and I clear away with my little finger's tip, and the area is a bit reddish- but my Dr. and the Surgeon both have said it looks great.

    The same thing and have been cleaning with soap and water also and keeping the area as dry as possible. My navigator said even so that this can happen. They can chemically treat it with silver nitrate which cauterizes it. I had a FT back in 2013 and don't remember ever having this. Found this on the net----

    DESPITE METICULOUS CARE, a gastrostomy tube (G tube) used to deliver enteral feeding and medication can trigger hypergranulation tissue growth at the insertion site. Apparently the product of inflamed epithelial tissue, hypergranulation may be the body's reaction to the G tube, a foreign body.

    Hello and I can second that info on the silver nitrate. I had/have a peg tube for a few months with no problems. The tube was a regular type with the bumper on the outside and a long tube with a clamp. After a few months I ditched it for a MIC KEY lo profile (Button) (No more tube to deal with except when feeding) Anyway, a couple months after I got the new MIC KEY tube I started experiencing mild pain and soreness around the stoma. I thought it was just because the Mic-Key had so much more slack than my previous tube but as it turned out it was the skin hyper granulating around the stoma. After a month or 2 I informed my local wound care specialist and she did the silver nitrate trick and bingo. Hypergranuation and pain all gone.

    Hope this helps.  They are available over the counter and the procedure takes 1 minute and is simple.

    I appreciate your input it was a great help. Next trip to the drug store I will get some-Also will run it by my nurse navigator again as when I read about it you have to be carful not to get it on good skin. I will see if she has any specifics on the application.Take Care-God Bless

    Well I will say this. My wound care nurse should have put a little Lydocaine on the tissue first because it it did sting like a SOB but only for a minute. I have my own prescription Lydocaine left over from when I had pain on my tongue and if I need it again I will use it for sure. Suprisingly the nurse was suprised it hurt. LOL
