Prostatectomy 2 years ago and now this

2+ years after a prostatectomy and still showing a non-detectable PSA now I'm faced with a 4.6 cm mass in my right kidney. Consultation next week with my urologist as to which direction to go. Partial or total . Given my history I want it all gone but I suppose I should wait and see what he says. He called me early today after gettting MRI results for another issue a couple days ago and it seems as if  surgery is the only option. The only question is which course to take. From the prostate event I have learned to take things a day at a time and the "cancer shock" has been dealt with emotionally. I'm just introducing myself to another  topic forum at CSN. Any and all input is greaty appreciated

    I went thru both Rodeos

My Prostate  removal was  9.30.2019. <y 6 week PSA is next Monday. My Neph was on 8.01.2002. A neph is enough.

You should be OK with 4.5 cm. Unfortunately a neph is my least gavorite of the 2.

    Depending on the location of

Depending on the location of the tumor and the skill of the surgeon a partial would be preferable to preserve as much kidney as possible. I would try to find someone who has experience in partial nephs. All the best to you!

    welcome jeffman-

Sorry you had to join us like this, especially after having gone through a prostatectomy already. But this is a great group here - we've been through what you're going through, so we know you're gonna do great.

Something you wrote made me curious-

"Partial or total . Given my history I want it all gone but I suppose I should wait and see what he says"

Partial or radical (total) nephretomy will both try to get it all gone. Partial doesn't mean that they leave the tumor in you - partial means that depending on the tumor's size/location, they can try to only take part of the kidney, leaving you with function in that kidney. If possible, partial is probably the way to go. But definitely consult with your doctor. If I misunderstood, I apologize.

Good luck with your consult! You've got this!

    Hi, and welcome.  I agree

Hi, and welcome.  I agree with all the posts above.  My husbands tumor was smack in the middle of the kidney, and that is why he had to have the entire kidney removed.  He is doing well with the remaining kidney.  This was at our second opinion doc, who would do a partial if possible.  .  The first doctor did not do partials, and his attitude was "so what, you can live with one good kidney".  We ran away from that guy.  Second opinions are fantastic, or at least knowing and trusting your doctors prior experience.  It is important to preserve whatever kidney function you can.  I wish you the best.  Its all going to be okay and you will get through this too.

    Done

Robotic partial nephrectomy completed Wednesday, home Friday afternoon, and entering the recovery period. So far so good. I'm learning something new every hour as far as what I can,and can't tolerate. I had 35% of my right kidney removed so I'm happy that the partial was doable. Follow up next week.

    Congrats!

I'm so happy for you that your surgery is done and you are safely back home.  Take it easy.  Eat, drink, walk, rest.  Naps are good.

    Congrats!

You did it! Great job, jeffman! Now focus on healing up and taking care of yourself. Try to walk as much as you can, but listen to your body, and you'll be healed up in no time.

Glad to hear it's behind you.

Glad to hear it's behind you. Agree with the above; walk as much as possible. I did 5 minutes around my house (it was winter with snow and ice then) every hour. Drink lots of water and yes, take it easy and have patience. Use a pillow against your abdomen if you have to cough or sneeze. All the best to you!
