5mm Lung Nodule

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

In July 2010 i had stage 4 cancer on my tongue and lymphnodes in my neck. I had surgery to replace 7/8 of my tongue and a double neck disection. Along with chemo and radiation.

On August 16th my left ribs was hurting behind them. I was tirder than i have ever been. Also i was having problems breathing. With my shoulders down i can not take a deep breath but if i raise my shoulders i can breath almost 2 times as much.

I went to my doctor and she ordered a ct scan and they found a 5mm noduale in my right middle lobe.

Who has had to deal with this issue before. Also any ideas whether or not it could be cancer. I do know my cancer doctor told me if i got cancer again it would come back in my lungs.

    Was your tongue cancer HPV+?

    If your original tongue cancer was HPV+, there are a couple threads I started in the last month or so talking about lung cancer and HPV, along with treatment options for recurrent HPV+ head and neck cancer.

    I just went through lung cancer treatments myself, but first things first: it's not cancer until they do a biopsy and tell you it's cancer. Sure, it could be... but there are lots of causes for benign lung nodules too. If the biopsy comes back that it's cancer, then ping me in this thread or via direct message. I've done a ton of research and would be glad to help if I can. :-)

    No i had stage 4 squamas cell carcinoma. With secondary in my neck lymphnodes.

    HPV+

    I had HPV+16 cancer of throat and now have lung cancer.  I would love more information on your research if you are still out there

    Very common in the general population

    Lung nodules occur commonly in the general population. I doubt you have lung cancer. I have and have had three lung nodules in the same 5mm range for the past ten years and it's not cancer. They occur for many reasons, in the midwest it could be histoplasmosis from bird droppings. A 5mm nodule is small and just has to be compared from one scan to the next to determine growth size. That said a couple of mm growth wouldn't necessarily mean anything as it really depends where the ct scanner slices that nodule. Nodule does not equal lung cancer and almost always is not cancer but something else. You have got something going on but jumping to lung cancer is probably not worth the consternation until you get some comparison scans. They monitored mine for three years that I wish I had not spent ruminating about the worst case scenario. Hang in there, Chances of cancer are minimal!

    I tottaly agree with ratface. In 2016 I was diagnosed with stage 3 SCC (poorly differentiated) in the left side of my neck. The cancer involved my major salavary gland, skin, skeletal muscle and one lympth node. Since my operation and radiation therapy I have developed a "nodule" in my left lung. At first I worried about having lung cancer, but, after numerous CT and PET scans the nodule hasn't grown. Staying at 5mm. So I don't worry about this nodule anymore. Still have to have CT and PET scans but no sleep lost over this lung nodule. Rest easy, follow your doctors advice and remember, as has been said often on this site, it isn't cancer unless a biopsy confirms cancer. Take care.
