New Meat Study
"This week the Annals of Internal Medicine published studies arguing that eating red meat poses minimal health risks for most people, and that even our certainty about that link is weak. With these conclusions in hand, the authors offered a set of recommendations that most people could continue their current levels of meat consumption"
Just wondering if anyone else heard or read about this and what they thought. I love steak but never ate it to excess before getting diagnosed, but now it is just hard for me to digest being that I've lost my rectum and some of my colon.
It kind of reminds me of when coffee, shrimp, etc. studies when they told you to not eat or drink something and years later find out nothing was really wrong with it in the first place.
Guess this is why I'm not throwing in the towel to any study out there as they always change their mind.
I've tried the Impossible Whopper from Burger King too and it's disgusting. If you take away the pickles, lettuce, tomato, it doesn't taste anything like beef and the condiments are the only thing that makes it taste close to a Whopper. Give me beef anyday as I'm sure that isn't what gave me cancer.

Studies
They drive me crazy.
Eggs was the study that got me. Egg yolks are bad for you. Phooey! God gave us egg to eat the whole thing, not pull them apart and eat egg whites only. Same with milk. Whole milk for me.
MODERATION that is the key. Eat and drink in moderation. Learn what works for YOUR body. Just becasue I say eat the whole egg and drink whole milk does not mean that will work for you (meaning anyone). It means that is what I have found works for ME.
While studies are good in some cases, they definitely are fed by money. You know what they say, '...money is the root of all evil'.
Just saying!
Now I'm off to have a nice little serving of steak for breakfast.

We were just talking about this at work today. Yes I heard the same thing. Really what it comes down to is moderation. If you eat the suggested serving size I guess you could eat anything. i believe they are using people as study groups. I.e. fats are bad so people went on a low fat diet and actually gained weight. Just my thought. Also you mentioned coffee. I think I also heard today that coffee is good for something.

New studies
Just because a study is new doesn't mean it's better or more correct than older studies. It's just new, and it adds more information to the collective knowledge. Some studies are designed better than others, which can make them more meaningful. The mass media always hypes the latest studies, but you can google the study on the internet to see how controversial the results are among researchers and health care providers. This is one where healthcare providers are definitely skeptical.

Annabelle, i have an
Annabelle, i have an iliostomy, which means no large intestines, part of my small was taken out, and stomach has been bypassed- but i still eat meat without issues- it digests jus as well as other foods do- and infact the 'caveman diet' as it's known (basically mostly red meat- very little veggies) is what my system does best with- certain veggies give me fits- My diet is basically a ham sandwich every morning for brunch, and a steak, pork, or chicken with maybe a few veggies or potato for dinner- every single day- only rarely do ui have soemthign like spaghetti or eggs or soemthign else for dinner just for a change- if red meat is bad for us I'm a prime candidate for whatever ill effects coem from it- oh well- it's not how long we live, it's how well we live durign hte time we have as far as I'm cocnerned, and part of that is eatign what i enjoy (I'm also a major sugar glutton too (although i have a very fast metabolism, so I don't gain weight from it)- so the odds are stacked agin me- but oh well- with an iliostomy, everythign goes htrough me so fast anyways- it doesn't have time to hurt me lol - but sriously, i decided a long time ago to enjoy- and that the word DIET is DIE with a "T" stuck on the end of it
I hope the study is right- but even if it isn't, I'm not changin my diet- rather enjoy my meals- enjoy what i enjoy, instead of forcing myself to 'learn to enjoy' stuff I don't like

I'll still eat meat, but now with no rectum and less colon it just doesn't agree with me but still love it. For 7 months, during treatment, they gave me a temporary ileostomy and yes, everything went right through me. However, with no rectum, it still can go right through me. Veggies are my favorite though and always have been. So glad you are able to eat what you want - go for it and enjoy it.

i have no rectum either and also had an ileostomy when they removed part of my small intestine too. I've been having issues so I'm on a low residue diet. That means no raw vegetables or fruits with seeds. No nuts etc. my meats cant be chewy. Every once in a while I'll have a salad. But sometimes I get pains (like a partial blockage). i don't even know what to eat anymore

i'm not sure that the meat industry would risk hundreds of billions of dollars worth of lawsuits to publish false info and hide facts from the public like hte tobacco companies did decades ago- I suppose it's possible they might, but seriously- that woudl be a really dumb busienss decision if they did publish false info liek that, and thousands of peopel ended up wuith cancer as a result of believing the study-

i don't eat red meat anyway and would never start eating it again but i have also heard about the links to the meat industry too. this is an interesting read regarding this trial & the links. i don't trust it either. Better safe than sorry

There is a push to get people to stop eating meat, which I'll never do because I'm too much of a meat eater (pork, chicken, and beef). But there have been so many studies done on things that I'm not able to believe any of them anymore. I'm thinking about all the little children that have contracted diseases and they have not had enough in their lifetime to give them these horrible diseases so to me these studies are sometimes useless.

Do what feels right for YOU
While it is important to read studies, you will always find one that says DON'T and one that says DO. At the end of the day, you have to weigh up what the pros and cons, and then do what feels good to you.
When I was first diagnosed, I asked my GI doc about foods, what to and what not to. He said this is not the time to be worrying about it. Go out and get yourself a big, juicy steak, and enjoy it.

Actually IMO a good medium to medium rare steak helps your blood #s, RBC ect.
I try to eat steak twice a month. Ours come from a local meat market, grass fed.
Other than steak I don't eat beef (hamburger and such). Not that I don't think its bad, just never really liked it.
I believe the only thing concrete as a cancer fuel is sugar.

Everything both causes and protects from cancer
I believe there are a lot of researches published with weak statistical data or are not very specific. The graph below shows a meta study done with several researches that says a given ingredient can cause cancer and others that says the same ingredient protects from cancer... the research link is below.
It scares me we have so many papers that can lead people to wrong conclusions.
