Husband just diagnosed with HCC, has hep B and starting Nexaver

My husband was just recently diganosed with HCC due to his Hep B. They want to start him on Nexavar and do a possible ablation. We are going for a second opinion at the Moffit Center in Tampa. Does anyone have anything encouraging to tell me because all I read is dismal. He has a mass 6.5 x 6.5 on the left lobe inoperable for some reason and the doctor said he sees spots on the left and right but not sure about those yet. We have a 9 year old son, I go from anger to crying (in the laundry or closet so son doesn't see). My son knows Daddy is sick but my husband does not want to tell him why yet. I do, I think he needs to know ahead of time. Just please, does anyone have anything positive or are we just in for an awful ride. Thanks so much, I'm so glad I found this.

    So sorry to hear

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. My husband has Stage 4 Bile Duct Cancer with mets to the lungs so he also has a huge tumor on his liver, everything I've read about any type of cancer that involves the liver the prognosis is poor, but they have come out with alot of new treatments so I try not to take everything I read to heart. My husband was diagnosed 15 months ago and at that time they gave him 3 months to live but with chemo and 2 different clinical trials he's been leading a fairly normal live.

We also have a young son at home-11 years old-and believe me they know when mom or dad is sick, it was the hardest thing we've ever had to do was tell him that his dad had cancer and will die. It shatters their safe little life and nothing after that is seen with childlike eyes, ours seem to grow up overnight after telling him but, we had to start to prepare him so it wasn't a complete shock when his dad really started to look sick, also they can come up with all sorts of things in their mind as to what is really going on so telling them the truth kinda gives them a sense of control when life as thrown them a curve ball. My son likes to e-mail me questions about his dad and his treatments, I think he feels this way he can ask me questions without seeing me get upset, which like you at first I was running to the bathroom multiple times a day to cry so he wouldn't see me, but thanks to my Dr who has given me some medicine to help me handle all of this and not break down every few seconds I can show our son that we can handle this as a family and yes things are and will be different but in the end he will be safe and alright.

As I said before don't take everything you read as the gospel truth, if Plan A fails there are Plan B's out there to. Most of his Dr's see his treatments as a way to maintain the cancer as there is no cure for the type of cancer he has and he couldn't have surgery because the tumor is wraped around the hepatic portal vein. Make sure your dealing with a major cancer center and drs that have dealt with your husband's type of cancer before and if your not sure what the drs are saying that he needs for treatments by all means go get a second or even a third opinion.

I wish you and your family the best of luck and at the end of the day just love on each other, after all none of us are promised a tomorrow even those of us who don't have cancer.

    Thank you

Thank you so much. Yes we are going to several doctors for several opinions. We found out yesterday he has one mass 7 cm on the left lobe with "small dots" he said around it that lit up on the PET scan as well as it is in his 2 lymph nodes near his liver. That doctor says Nexavar and ablabtion. Another doctor said that Mayo clinic should be able to transplant his liver but I'm not sure if they remove lymph nodes? I guess. We are also going to a doctor in Miami who is a specialist and the Moffit Center is also a place we are going that is supposed to be one of the best. I am trying to stay optimistic but everything I see and read is so bleak. We are slowly trying to tell our son. He knows Daddy is very sick and I've heard him tell his best friend his Dad might die but he says he won't. I know we have to tell him soon and his little heart will change forever. I don't know what is killing me more, losing my husband or my son losing his Daddy and his childhood. Thank you so much. I'm so sorry you are going through this. It was very nice to have someone respond who understands. I too have been given an anti-anxiety med which is helping me a lot. I'm also looking into Pheonix Tears CBD oil that has actually cured some people of this awful prognosis. Keep in touch! Love to you and your family. Oh and yesterday we were told he is stage 3. One doctor is so bleak and another is not. I'm going with the not bleak one :)
