New Diagnosis

in Breast Cancer #1

Hi everyone, 

After 22 years and a battle with AML 16 years ago, my wife and I back on a war footing again with a new diagnosis of breast cancer. It was caught early and in the same breast as before but in a different spot. I am told it is HR2 negative and estrogen reactive. Most likely stage 1. 

Because this is a recurrence in the same breast, the only treatment option is a mastectomy. The doctor feels from the biopsy results that it is contained with no spread. 

We have a consult with a surgeon on Friday and go from there. One day at a time. 

I guess I'd like to hear from anyone who's been down this same road with the same type of BC.

    One Day at a Time

    I had stage 2 Estrogen positive and HR2 negative ca but mine was more extensive. I actutally had two types of cancer, invasive ductal carcinoma in the right breat and invasive lobular carcinoma in the left. I also had involment in one lymph node on the left. I had a double mastectomy, followed by radiation. I did not have to have chemo because my Oncotype score was low. Oncotype testing predicts the chance of reoccurence.

    I am having DIEP flap reconstruction in a few days. I am feeling great. I reached out to as many people as I could to talk openly about what I was going through. With lots of love and prayers, I got through it one day at a time. Keep posting here and let us know how the surgery consult goes.

    We'll meet with the surgeon tomorrow and go from there. Lots of prayers and taking it one day and one step at a time.

    As I mentioned, this is the third go-round we've had. My wife had a stage 1 in the same breast 22 years ago. and had a lumpectomy and radiation. Unfortunately, in those days, the protocol was 10 weeks of radiation. Possibly, as a result, she developed Acute Myelogenous Leukemia 16 years ago.  She's been very healthy since then until this last routine mammogram a month ago.

    The radiologist said the surgeon will probably refer her to an oncologist, but he doesn't think she will need chemo. She may need hormonal therapy, but one step at a time... :)

    Update

    We met with the surgeon on Friday. He will do a single mastectomy with no reconstruction on Tuesday, April 17th at Kaiser Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA. Amazingly, it is day surgery there. During my wife's lumpectomy 22 years ago, she had most of her lymph nodes removed. They will do a sentinel node test this time and hope that there is no spread of the disease. He doesn't think there is, but an invasive 1.5 cm.  growth is approaching a size where there could be. 

    On top of that, my wife's uncle passed away yesterday. Just a very tough time, but we will get through it!
