I'm a really, really bad pet owner :(
I'm not kidding - I thought I'd share so no one else does the same.
Whenever I do roast chicken, I always boil the bones after and make chicken vegetable soup, yummy! so a few times a year - I'd make soup, and my dog would get a ladle of it on her food, for which I was greatly loved!
When I was diagnosed, and thru treatment and after, I ate a lot of chicken, cut up in tiny bits, lots of gravy and mashed potatoes.. so I couldnt taste it, I could still smell it, and use my imagination!
And everytime - I made soup, and I'd ladle it into the millions (ok not quite that many) of mugs I have, cover, and freeze - it made life easier. My appetite was.. lets just say, one rung up from non existant. So I'd take a mug out, zap it in the microwave, almost instant yummy goodness.
But as my appetite was so tiny, I'd eat about half, and my ever watchful German Shepherd would wait for me to give her what I couldn't finish. So over the course of the last year - she did pretty ok, on human food.
She's been sick recently - vet bills are almost as bad as cancer bills - and weve had to medicate, and try and work out what was wrong. We are still under the diagnosis cloud as we dont have a definitive one - BUT - while looking up what to give her that would be healthy for her, I read "Onions and Garlic kill dogs and cats" They cause Heamolytic Anaemia. Which destroys their red blood cells.
omg the guilt - the first thing I toss in the pot, is chopped onions.. so, I have been giving my girl, an almost twice a week dose of poison.
(Not to mention the pasta and sauce she loves...)
I am a bad pet parent

It's like being a parent...
...and everything else in life. We do the best we can with the knowledge we have at the time. Had you known, and done it anyway, then you could feel guilty. Hope she is well real soon.
Dogs also should not have chocolate or grapes.

Having worked in animal
Having worked in animal hospital for years and seen the result of human food and pets, it's best to just avoid it altogether. You can add dairy to list of things not to give your pet. Dark chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins and on and on. Oh, and bird seed should your dog ever get into it.
Having said that, my own dog got into a bag of red chocolate bits I used when making candy. He got really sick but nothing major because it wasn't dark chocolate. I've never heard about garlic being toxic to dogs though.

My Dog Says..
Thank You! You didn't know about the onions and garlic but now a lot of us do so you're even on the Karma board. Tell your Vet what's been going on and see what they say. Maybe it's treatable once they know what may have caused the illness. It may not even be what you fed him.
We are bad about giving our dog dairy. He loves cheese and I usually give him a small bit several times a week. My wife lets him lick her yogurt bowl after lunch so there's another problem. Now I need to do some research to see if we are harming him. We've been doing it for over 5 years with no ill effects so far. But I surely don't want to harm my beloved dog.
Thanks for all the info, and you too, Tonita.
