Diet and Recurrence

Search youtube for Dawn Lemanne and you'll find her talk on carbohydrate restriction and cancer.

We have discussed this in other threads, but none of us are experts.

Anyone who is interested should watch this talk by a real expert.

Diabetes is a simple disease and easy to treat but cancer has no easy answers. Anything that can help is worth knowing about. There is lots of research being done and it all adds up.

Steve.

The one I listened to talked

The one I listened to talked about carb restriction and the recurrence of colon cancer and a type of breast cancer. Kidney wasn't even listed as affected by diet on the video I watched. She also pointed out that it only helped those with colon cancer who had BMI index 25 and above. No effect was found for normal weight people. Again, obviously a healthy diet with minimum sugar and low glycemic index carbs can only benefit everyone. But she did not convince me that Keto is going to save the world from cancer. That one famous book by her and the patient, "N of 1" has also been critiqued and found to have a lot of weaknesses. Finally, the beauty of "experts" is that any side of any argument can find some to support it. My main point is that by looking at any diet as a magic solution can end up making those whose cancer return feel like they've failed somehow. "IF only I did this, if only I did that," well, unfortunately cancer can and does return and it's not because the person ate rice or potatoes. Don't mean to debunk anything, I was a research scientist so I respect various hypotheses and don't discount them out of hand. But I need more "proof" than single N studies and I don't like to see people beat themselves up if their cancer returns that "only if" they went keto this wouldn't be happening. Ok, off my soap box now.

    If changing your diet makes

If changing your diet makes you feel empowered than I say go for it. Do what makes you feel right. We all have had cancer and we all need to find ways to cope with that reality and with our fears of it returning. Having said that I agree with APny. If you are overweight or struggle to maintain blood sugar than the proper diet will help with your overall health , but I don't believe what I ate caused my kidney cancer not do my doctors  And I don't think it will side it to return.

    No magic

    Hi APny,

I never said that diet is a magic solution to cancer. The Dr. never says that keto will save the world from cancer. But I think her talk is an interesting overview of the diet/cancer subject. I found it very informative.

Diet really is a magic solution, but to diabetes, not cancer. If you know anyone with type 2 diabetes they really should investigate low carb diets. Now that I've said that I can get off my own soap box.

    Steve.

No, of course she didn't say

No, of course she didn't say that and neither did you. I was just using hyperbole. My main concern is always that I don't want anyone to feel that, should their cancer return, it was somehow their fault because of eating this or not eating that. I wish to God it was that easy. I really do. But yes, it was an interesting talk and I'm sure many would benefit from lowering blood sugar by eating more healthy.

    Yep...

I agree... do whatever makes you feel the best.  I look at things in a very logical way and I research a lot.  Personally, I don't think for a minute that the "fickle finger of fate" pointed at me and said "you have kidney cancer."  I did it to myself and i'm convinced I know how.  I was always very athletic and kept in good shape.  I was a runner for 20+ years, played high school, college, and city league sports and skiied competively until I was in my 40's.  I've  really never been sick a day in my life, but have suffered my share of  sports injuries which led to years of me over-using NSAIDS (ibuprofen and tylenol).  I have no proof, but I'm positive that is what caused my kidney cancer.  I think there is a logical reason we all get cancer, yes even kids, but that is only my opinion.

The research I keep coming back to is that everyone has cancer cells in their bodies, but a strong immune system destroys them.  If your immune system gets compromised (obesity, bad diet,  smoking, genetics-or in my case misuse of NSAIDS) then cancer can take over.

My logic tells me that if my body allows cancer because of a weakend immune system, then my body can control it by strengthening it.  This can only be done by diet change.  That is why I have gone to heavy juicing and a more  plant based diet.  I've read research that shows certain vegetables will completely kill cancer cells.  For kidney cancer, leaks and garlic are the 2 most potent.  I can't stomach either one, so I go with the next best things.  Kale, spinach, and beets are very effective against kidney cancer.  I juice a huge amount of these, along with 5 pounds of carrots everyday.  Will it be effective?  If I'm still alive and cancer free in 5 years I'll say yes.  If not, at least I went down swinging  This diet has completely changed the way I feel.  I have incredible energy, my mind is so much sharper, I don't have the aches and pains, and I literally feel  25 years younger. (I'm 58).  Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a glass of wine and something on the grill, but I only do it occassionally.  Just my 2 cents.

Steve. Adam thanks different diets is something I enjoy knowing more about.

randyradiohill, I also too ibuprofen at few days a month for those womens monthly times for a while. I wonder how it really effected my body. I agree changing diet is at least a good proactive fight. I can also tell a difference in my body in the foods I eat.

    I agree randyradiohill

I was never overweight,  do not drink alcohol,  do not smoke, eat healthy, but, for over 20 years took one tylonel pm to help sleep. My gynecologist said all those years -no problem -.  But, I think the tylonel caused my kidney cancer.  So now,  I eat healthy,  drink half my body weight in ounces,  take plexus probio5 for my immune system.  Immune system is very important.  Thanks for all the knowledge you guys share.

    My Oncologist told me Tylenol

My Oncologist told me Tylenol is processed by the liver, not the kidney so if anything, I would think you would have problems with your liver. I was told after my neph to take Tylenol for pain and not Ibuprofen. But of course taking anything long term is not a good idea.
