Sal I had full nephrectomy in

Sal I had full nephrectomy in September. It was a good week before food even tasted ok. Probably about 2 weeks till I started getting an appetite. It does return and so do your taste buds. Good luck to you keep us updated.

    In hospital

Was off liquid diet on 2nd day in hospital. Had no real appetite when home. A lot of soup, eggs, smoothies. I lost 20 pounds in month following survey...but have put it back on!!!! Trying to lose weight for cardiologist recommendations.

I had my surgery 5 weeks ago.
I had my surgery 5 weeks ago. It took about 4 days for food to really sound good. At first it was mainly liquid or soft foods as that first bowel movement isn’t the friendliest. I lost about 15 pounds from surgery but I’m keeping it off as my Dr suggested the dash diet to bring down my blood pressure and lose more weight. I’ve found everyone is different with their recovery. Good luck on your upcoming surgery. Take it easy after surgery and remember a recliner and TV is going to be your best friend for a week or so.

    Hoss, thank you very much.

Hoss, thank you very much. Sounds like I had better be prepared to lose some weight unfortunately.

I too was off the liquid diet

I too was off the liquid diet second day after surgery but had zero appetite. I didn't really regain it for quite some time. What helps not too lose too much weight is Sustacal. Comes in chocolate and vanilla and tastes pretty good. I pretty much lived on soup, soft boiled eggs, toast, things like that. Didn't have any taste for meat or anything substantial for a couple of weeks.

Hi Sal.  I had a robotic

Hi Sal.  I had a robotic partial that started at about 3 in the afternoon, and I was given breakfast the next morning and, surprisingly, I ate it all.  I was released just after lunch and, yes, I had a decent sized lunch too.

I had some soup and ice cream

I had some soup and ice cream while I was waiting for my room to be ready.  I was hungry. It was evening. I had breakfast the next morning. My surgery was robotic lap partial

    Partial robotic

for me, too.  I was back in the room by 7:00 pm and had some jello about mid-night just before I got up to walk for the first time.  I had a pretty good breakfast the next morning.  I was eating okay from that point on.

    Solid Food Immediately

I had a partial nephrectomy 9 November. Ate clear soup a lamb roast and jelly and ice cream 2 hours after surgery and followed that up with 21 more plates of food in  3 days in hospital.  We counted because it was so ridiculous. Pain was moderate but I actually had to stop myself from ordering more food I was ravenous.  Was never offered soft foods.

My experience was a little different

Mine was a radical laparosopic nephrectomy that became open due to a complication.

My intestines must have been thrown around because they stopped working for days.  I felt so bloated and uncomfortable that I didn't eat at all for several days and not much for the rest of my time there.

I think I weighed 89kg when I went in and I was 83kg when I got home 9 days later.

When you have no appetite it is easy to fast. It certainly didn't worry me at the time.

I have type 2 diabetes but it is well controlled with a very low carb diet. I did my best to choose foods that I could eat but the hospital kitchen kept sending me diabetic meals that were mostly carbs. I sent a lot of food back uneaten even after my appetite started returning.

The medical mainstream does not deal very well with insulin resistance and diabetes.

    Steve.
