Medical expense deductions
As a cancer patients, we often end up paying very high medical bills and drug costs. I haven’ t had the stomach for politics these days, but there is something being debated that effects cancer patients and other chronically ill patieints. I just wrote my Congressmen asking them to support the provision in the Senate Tax bill that restores the medical tax deduction to Pre-Obama rates. Prior to Obama, people could deduct the cost of medical expenses that exceeded 7.5% of Adjusted Gross Income. The Obama administration raised that threshold to 10% of AGI, in order to fund the government. That was a cruel and heartless move that hurt cancer patients, and cost me thousands of dollars in one year when I was being treated for 2 cancers. Nobody spoke up for the sick and disabled at the time, so it went through and hurt a lot of people
This is not political, it effects all cancer patients and we need to let our representatives know that we need to have the medical exemption provision in the Senate tax bill kept in the final bill. Cancer patients need to speak up for ourselves!

My understanding is that the
My understanding is that the current proposed (passed in the Senate) tax bill will eliminate the medical deduction completely. They are raising the standard deduction high enough to eliminate a lot of filers being able to itemize at all. I've emailed my congressman a few times since Trump was elected. Remembering the Reagan years, the middle class and working poor will get the shaft and nothing will trickle down.

Senate bill RESTORES medical exemption
Peony, it is exactly the opposite. The Senate Bill that was passed by the Senate RESTORES the medical tax deduction to the amount that exceeds 7.5% of AGI, which it had been under Republican President Bush. In order to fund the ACA and not upset the unions, the Democrats under Obama RAISED the threshold and made it so that people could only deduct the amount thT exceeded 10% of AGI. It effected me substantially the last time I battled cancer. They funded Obamacare on the backs of the sick and disabled. The press did not cover it at all, because the press is liBeral and the sick do not have a voice. It is up to us, as cancer patients, to contact Congress now and let them know that cancer patients need to keep the rate in the Senate bill! Don't be fooled by lies! I have read the Senate Bill! I voted for Obama, and I believed that the ACA would help me, as I was a solo practioner then, buying my health insurance on the individual market at a high rate. After the ACA was passed, I was shocked to learn that the cost of my health insurance went much higher, the medical expense deduction threshold went up to the amount that exceeded 10% Of AGI, and it hurt the disabled and chronjically ill, seniors, and cancer patients. Now, I read the documents myself because the Democrats lied to the American people and thought we were too stupid to realize It! They are lying now and trying to scare seniors for political purposes. The Senate Reform Bill is a good bill for most Americans.
