Indiana Pouch Infections

Hello - I am hoping you can help my father, he has had his Indiana pouch for about 8 years and he is suffering terribly with infections in the pouch. Have you experienced any types of infections associated with the pouch or have you heard of anything like this? Every time the infection strikes, it's a different stain of bacteria. He gets high fevers accompanied with uncontrollable chills. He has been in an out of the hospital for years now and still no cure for the infections. We're thinking as a family that perhaps he should have the surgery reversed and wear an external bag? Any insight you could provide will be very helpful. Thank you

    The easiest way to locate other CSN members with similar experiences is to type keywords (such as "Indiana pouch," "pouch infections," etc.) on the search bar at the top of the home page. You can refine your search by clicking on the “Advance search” link listed underneath the search field.     Infections
    When I first got my pouch 15 months ago I was given 4 Catheters per month and the only way to keep them clean was to wash them with hot water and a good anti bacteria soap and hope you got them as sterile as you could. After 2 UTI"s my wife being a nurse got a letter of medical necessity from my surgeon and he signed it and we sent it into my insurance company. They accepted it and I now get 180 Catheters per month they pay %80 of the cost. Now I have never gotten anymore UTI's or any infections, mainly because I never have to reuse a Catheter. Keep in mind when you are Cathing you are sticking a foreign object into your body so you want it to be completely sterile. Maybe this is something you might want to look into if you have to reuse your Catheters. Stayawarrior-Joe

    I have had the indiana pouch for 21 years now. I also had uti quite a bit. It has gotten better over the years because I retired and I now have a controlled enviroment. I get plenty of catherters and do not reuse that much. A problem I had was pouch stones which I can't seem to get rid so I live with them . I get a urology check up once a year and they do a ct scan to check everything out.i was in and out of the hospital the first 10 years because I was working in a dirty enviroment. After I retired things got progressively better. I chose the pouch because I was 40 years old at the time. I'm glad I did because it gives alot of freedom to do what you want/. Hope this helps.

    I had the Neo-bladder about
    I had the Neo-bladder about a year ago but My Dr. made the in pouch and he works at the UK hospitial in Lex. Ky. Dr Roland. I would suggest calling him and asking him about it since it was his thing. He also works at the UK clininc in KY

    Indiana Pouch infections
    I would like to know if anyone has had frequent infections with an Indiana Pouch. I get them about every 2 - 3 weeks. They are very intense and make me very sick, sometimes putting me in the hospital. I use a new catheter with every empty. Any insight would be appreciated.
