Surgery Today

I have been browsing this discussion board ever since I got the news the Dr's found a mass on my kidney. I decided to register today. I am schedule for surgery this afternoon. The Dr's found a 6.5cm partially exophytic, centrally necrotic mass in my upper pole of my right kidney. The scans show my lungs, spleen, liver and pancreas were clear/negative. No renal vein tumor thrombus. No evidence of distant metastatic disease. To say I am scared is an understatement. I went in for my yearly physical and they found some microscopic blood in my urine. My general referred me to a urologist referred me for a CT scan. Almost 3 weeks later here I am on the day of surgery. I am almost 38. What am I up against?

Don't be scare, you should be

Don't be scare, you should be happy about it, since the monster will be gone after today. Also, you mentioned you are only 38, the recovery is gonna be way easier than most of the us in this forum! Lastly, the risk from nephrectomy is so small because it is a very sophisticated surgical procedure. I used the caluculator that surgeosn used to calculate surgical risk and it shows my risk is less than 1%. I was 42 when I had my Open surgery!

You will be fine! Wish you a speedy recovery!

    Welcome Hoss

And by the time you see this, you'll probably be on the recovery side of things.  The good news, it sounds like it was found relatively early and hopefully your surgery will be all you need.  Also, you're pretty young, so hopefully your recovery will go smooth.  The first week or so are the worst of it physically, and you can expect it may take some time to digest the other aspects of this diagnosis.  Just be patient with yourself.  It can be a wild ride initially.

Prayers for your surgery to go well and recovery swift.

    Donna~

    Surgery was about 2 hours.
Surgery was about 2 hours. The Dr removed the entire right kidney. I’m sore but pain meds are helping. Already standing up and it feels good. The Dr said the pathology report should take about a week.

So glad it's over. Wishing you a boring, uneventful recovery! Walking is good, do as much as you can. Also make sure you use the breathing apparatus they gave you to keep your lungs clear.

    good to hear

Good to hear you are out of surgery and feeling, well, as good as can be expected.

If you've only seen a urologist up until now, I'd make sure to follow up with a urologic oncologist just to make sure all of the bases got covered.

    I hope

this helps you a little bit.  I am 42 years old.....41 years old when diagnosed with RCC.  Had a 10+cm mass on/in my right kidney.  Recovery was tough, but it only took me about 6 weeks after open surgery.   Fast forward 14 motnhs later and I am 100% back to normal and other than having to get my scans every 3 months, I live a rather normal life.  I am very aware that no two recoveries are the same, I am confident you will make it thru this.  Thinking and praying for you.

    Standing Already

Up and standing already, that's fantastic.  I had my right kidney removed more than a year ago and can tell you I wasn't standing up the first day.  I think that because you are up and moving so soon should mean your recovery will go well.

All the best and god bless.

I was 37 when i had my neph.

I was 37 when i had my neph. i was walking  in the hall the same night of my surgery with help. the first few day were rough but mainly due to gas. it will pass. I also didnt realise how much you use your stomach muscles. i actually could not get up from coach  once . My wife and son had to lift couch up so i could walk away, lol. I was feeling good and almost myself in about 2 weeks. I went back to work in 4 weeks. I dont work in an office. My tumor was 11.7 cm. You will be back to your normal sooner than you think.
