LIVER CANCER

So my dad was diagnosed with Liver cancer in January 2016 and it was stage A (or maybe 1). It was the best case for liver cancer. It was about an inch in size I think. They told him he would probably need 3 chemo treatments to get rid of it. He also found out he had hepititus C. He ended up doing 1 chemo directly into the liver and no where else on his body. Now when he does the MIR scans it is completely gone. They had him do 5 sessions of radiation directly into the liver just to be on the safe side. They then gave him medicine to take care of the hep C and that is GONE too! All GREAT NEWS! But, I am a research freak and everything I come accross shows that only 43% of patients survive more than 5 years IF THEY CATCH IT EARLY... My dad caught it super early and its supposedly not in his body anymore but I am terrified I will only have a few more years with him. He is super healthy, he lifts weights every day, does 1 hour of cardio and then goes home and walks his dog for an hour. He has been that way for as long as I can remember. But since he has been diagnosed he has cut out ALL ANIMAL PRODUCTS, because supposedly cancer feeds on animal products. He also no longer drinks.

Could he be around for another 25 years? Or are those statistics right and he could be gone in 5ish years?

My dad is literally my best friend and I have been going crazy thinking about losing him. Any input would be so helpful.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!

I had 9 cm tumor on my liver

I had 9 cm tumor on my liver removed back in 2010. My doctor said I am "cured" now. I was lucky since there is no mets and my liver was in good function.Don't trust the 5 year survical rate, it is a statistic and for reference only. Keep a healthy diet is the most improtant task.

Johns Wife - I read your other post and I think you need more opinions for your hubby's condition.

I had a liver transplant Nov 15,2016 and my Hcc came back. Doctors in Pittsburgh say it's not good.Just had chemo embolization and they are putting me on nexvar. I need help. I feel they waited to long to do the transplant and my cancer spread too much. Trying to find a hospital that can give me some hope and  better treatment options.

Science has come a long way

When I was diagnosed with cancer everyone was dying in 30 days of diagnosis. It was a death sentence. Now it's not. I have been with cancer for a long time. My diagnosis was in May 2002. The doctors even figured out a way to put the tumor 'asleep', dormant, chemically, so I was cancer symptom free for a few years and no chemotherapy although the tumor was still alive. I have changed my ways and I am not out of the woods with my cancer. Very scary even with great medical doctors. I have inoperable primary liver cancer with a relatively healthy liver, disease free except for the cancer. I have been taking chemotherapy by pill. The side effects are sometimes and sometimes nonexistent. I wonder sometimes if I am the biggest baby alive. ; ) I was working for most of the years I've had cancer. This time I have been off work for a year. I came pretty close to hospitalization with the last job, it was part time but the hours didn't get along with my chemotherapy and the employer didn't respond well to working with me or my doctors. I was getting sick two and three times a month when I had to quit. Up from once every couple of months. It's been hard, and it takes time to get back to being able to go out and not be sick with something. At least now liver cancer patients are living longer and being cured. A few years ago there were no cures, no liver cancer survivors. We've come a long way, baby.

    There is help

There are people who will and want to help you and your baby. Talk to your doctor. There are supporting groups. Work with the people who are there for deaf children. Good luck and be well.

Best of luck to your father. I just read your story and was stunned by the similarity to my own. But, I was just diagnosed two weeks ago and have a (chemo) TACE scheduled in three days.

Just for your research... I suffered with Hep C for nearly 50 years (not fun when the virus acts up). Many Vietnam veterans like myself came down with it. Your Dad?

A year+ ago, an affordable, generic form of Harvoni hit the market here (in Thailand). It took care of the Hep C but it was rumored to lead to cancer later on in life. Facebook and others have several support groups, but that rumor bugs me.

Again, best to you and Dad.

    Eliquis

I took Eliquis to get rid of a blood clot in my portal vein. The clot was discovered after an MRI performed in October 27, 2015. I was refered to a Thombosis specialist who started me on Eliquis on November 23. An Ultra Sound performed on December 30, 2015 revealed that the blood clot had disapeared. The doctor kept me on Eliquis for a couple more months just to be sure that the blood clot did not reoccure. My portal vein has been clear of blood clots since then. I did not experience any side effects.

Best wishes to you Mr Ball

    Hi MBall,
I, myself had Hep C and got rid of it by (doing a drug trial - August 2014) a one day a pill for 12 weeks, I was free of Hep C in January 2015.  Found out that my cirrhosis liver has 5.9cm (it was too small back in January MRI 2016 so it wasn't an HCC yet at the time.)  Last month, my doctor told me I was going to get a Radioembolization but the other day, the Intervention Radiology said, that I will be getting a TACE instead.  And now I am set up for a clinic consultation in 2 weeks for the chemo (which I am not thrilled about - due to some serious side effects, especially 40 years ago I had a bone marrow transplant and didn't want to mess up my immune system.)
So hopefully, your chemotherapy was successful and everything is good for you.  Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My husband has stage 4 liver cancer and is on Nexavar been three weeks now.  So far side effects not to bad.  Lost a lot of weight and has no appetite but we are very optismitic.  Doctor said he probably will have to stay on Nexavar since it surgery is not an option.

    side effects

Hello, my husband also has liver cancer and was just precribed Nexavar. He hasnt started taking it because he is scheduled for another embolization in February and would have to stop it for awhile.  Dr. told him it has many side effects so concerned and it doesn't work well with liver cancers.  What side effects is your husband having? Would appreciate any information you can give since we don't have any comparisons.

ask Dr about Opdivo  - it

ask Dr about Opdivo  - it used to be a trial med and is now approved by FDA so insurance will pay.

It works with yoru immunity. My Mom was having some good results and her AFP was going down with that.
