Surgery on Monday
Hi, am new to this, At the end of Sept.at my routine annual physical my Dr. added an ultra sound. That showed somethng in the area of my right kidney so he called me back for a CT scan. That sent me to a uroligist who informed me that I have a cancerous tumor on or in my kidney. We discussed my options, chemo doesn't do that much, radiation destroys good as well as bad tissue and is time consuming. After discussion we decided removing the kidney my best option. Surgery will be Monday at 0730. Am not overly worried about it, I have an excellent Dr., the surgeon comes highly recommended with something like 200 of these surgeries under his belt. Turned 80 this year and with no family history of Cancer i don't know where this came from but gonna get it taken care of. Hopefully all will go well and will be up and about in a few weeks.

Take it a little easy after the surgery
Ken,
Having made the decision I won.t weigh in on that. Mine was 15 years ago and that sounds like a reasonable goal for you. I am 74 years young and I can suggest that you take youre recovery slow and easy as there are a lot of 50 and 60 year old kids on this board (and even younger).

Hi Ken
Sorry to hear. ... you have had a bit of a rude awakening although if you don’t mind me saying you look as if are one strong dude.
Surgery is a very quick easy method to solve your problem
Its not easy but very doable easy managed

YOU, Ken, have an excellent
YOU, Ken, have an excellent attitude!
And size of walnut sounds like Stage I perhaps.
Did your surgeon say he's going to try a Parital nephrectomy rather than take your kidney out?
Have you ever had any surgeries before? They use a gas to pump up your abdomen so the surgeon can SEE. And it gets trapped inside, usually around your shoulder. It HURTS, but remember its only a gas (not like stomach gas) which needs to find a way out. I moved my arm around and around to help get it out. AND they will get you up 1st night of surgery. First you'll sit on edge of bed, then stand, then try walking. WALKING is crucial to prevent clots.
I also used a lumbar velcro wrap (used for bad backs). It helped me hold up those sore, healing muscles. Helped me get UP from sitting or laying down.
Let us know if you have any other questions. YOu'll be okay.
Sending you CALM with a good recovery!
Hugs, Jan

Ken
Mine was 4.4 cm slighly larger than said walnut and here I am two months later all fixed and the memory of the first week all gone
It’s not pleasant that’s for sure but not as hard as you think and then cancer is hopefully gone for ever
Like the great Iceman All clear after 14 years
Kiwi was sitting up eating her dinner 7 hours after her operation
Good Luck I will be thinking of you across the pond

mine was 4.5cm and the Doc also called it "size of a walnut". I hope your surgery and recovery is smooth and as uneventful as mine was!
