Complication

I went in for a lap partial, and they ended up not even finishing the surgery - my tumor was too difficult to get to laproscopically, and my surgeon hadn't done an open since his residency. So, he decided to not go forward after he had already opened me up. I meet with a new surgeon tomorrow and will hopefully have a new date.

So, it can happen - I think mine was unique, but he had mentioned that morning that he was worried about it being in a difficult spot and might not be able to finish the surgery. It worked out well for me because now I have one of the best surgeons in the state at one of the best hospitals in the state. So it worked for the best.

I had laparoscopic surgery but it was radical, not partial. I got wheeled back in to surgery to stop some internal bleeding.

In spite of that it turned out to be a dream result. No further complications of any kind. Very little pain or discomfort.

Your surgery is around the corner don't let those "thoughts" get in the way-according to my Dr things don't change so quickly- he told me i had week/months to schedule my surgery of course i took the soonest date.  Good luck!!!

I asked this question of my surgeon.  He said that for me 2.2cm in lower pole of left kidney turning into a radical from a partial would mean something went very seriously wrong.  The question of laprascopic to open didn't come up, but he offered me a choice.  I am not sure why, maybe because he is skilled at both.   I have read a few studies on tumour growth, it isn't very likely for a small rcc to grow fast and be invasive in a short period of time.   Not impossible, but not likely.

Today I went for my pre-op appt AND saw my family doctor this past Tuesday. Both warned it could turn in to an open. Let's hope for no complications and that is goes as planned. An open sounds awfully painful!!!

Just had an open last week and I recovered well. The only complication is I had to have a piece of rib removed that I did not anticpate. I was warned that it could be a Nerphrectomy but luckily just remained open. I feel like the pain end of it is the same no matter which way you go.  They will give u pain pills however for me I recovered better just taking Tylenol because I didn't want to be gooped up. My advice is to sit up and get up and walk as soon as u can . The most painful parts for me was the JP drain, the cat, and monday I,m getting the staples out  . I think u will recover fast  because your so sweet.

AnnisaP you will be coming out as I will be going in (9th NZ time is 8th US time).   I wish you all the best.  Do have a plan, but be open to change, there is no pass/fail for you, just that you keep positive in your mind.   I liken it to having a baby, just before all three of my deliveries I was a bit panicked, what if it didn't go to plan, guess what, it never did! You know THE PLAN. The one I wrote out in scented pen on hand pressed organic paper, where there was candle light , essential oils, music and a drug free, pain free birth! Yeah right! 

Plan for the worst, hope for the best and hopefully it will be somewhere in between.   There was nothing I could do in those deliveries once they happened but keep my sense of humour,  trust in the process and the team and their advice.   One was born on the bathroom floor, one was 6 weeks early, one had a brain injury at birth and I had some pretty good injuries myself, but we have prevailed, we are all still here two decades later and enjoying life immensely.  

Have someone advocate for you if you can't, there is no harm in asking a question.

Yes, seems you are worrying and thinking up these scenarios. WE get that!

I wanted laparascopic over open so much, but prepared myself to trust the judgment of my surgeon. TRUST~

They need to tell you ahead of time so you are not surprised. 

So when I menioned it to him, moments before surgery, he said, Of course I am doing laparascopic! Never even mentioned open.

Just HAD TO ethically I guess.LOL

You're going to be ok. Remember our bodies respond to our thoughts=stay positive!
