How about "ALL Cancers October"

Ahem
Last month was gynecologic cancer awareness month. We all need to raise awareness about that. Why don't we? Thing is, there are not as many people effected as there are with breast cancer and society has made it ok to talk about breasts but not so much about those other lady parts in public. I agree with everyone, but what all the pink hype has done is make the general public think that having breast cancer is a piece of cake and a good excuse for a boob job. It is neither. As a survivor of both breast and endometrial cancers, I posted about gynecologic cancers last month and this month about breast cancer of my Facebook page. I changed my profile picture to a pink ribbon for October. Had I found a peach ribbon last month, I would have done that too. I have done nothing about all of the other cancers - lung, liver, pancreatic, brain, and on and on. So why not an "all cancer month"? We never pay any attention to any of it (except Pink October where you can even buy wine with a pink ribbon) unless it effects us. This is wrong. And I don't have an answer except that metastatic breast cancer kills far too many and early detection can save lives - before the cancer has a chance to metastasize. Listen up - get your mammograms! And yes, Pink October has gotten totally out of hand - too commercialized, and companies capitalize on putting a pink ribbon on just about anything! I just did a fundraiser for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). There are many many OTHER causes that are worthwhile that and are NOT pink. And this is all coming from a breast cancer survivor who wears pink proudly in October. One in eight women you know . . . but I think you have to live under a rock not to know that.

Not my favorite color either!Cass83 said:Totally Agree!
I too thought I was the only one that felt this way! I have had people assume since I am female that my cancer was breast. I have had to tell them, no it was uterine. I have seen pictures on FB that say "Not All Cancer is Pink" and love it!
BTW, our color is Peach. I do not like peach. Who came up with that? Some man? ugh I like pink, but I agree with everyone, wearing it makes people think I had breast cancer.
Our local highschool football just had a Pink out, and "tacke cancer". Ok, so tackle cancer, but wear a different color, or multi color to represent us all.
Thanks so much for posting and saying what so many have thought!
Cass, I've had the same thing happen!
Peach doesn't flatter me and I don't wear that color.
What I think we need is a multi-colored ribbon that represents cancer more broadly. I would definitely pin it on and wear it!

I plan to do this walk. Let me know if any of you will be there so we can meet up. I plan to go to the educational session the day before, also. It‘s free.
Wow I wish I could! Maybe next year....

Why not dedicate a month to cancer awareness in general - maybe designate each week for a variety of cancers - that way everyone is included - even those very rare one. My mom and aunt have breast cancer, my husband pancreatic cancer, and me I have endometrial uterine cancer.
