    No PEG tube

I was offered but I did not want to have it. I felt like my muscelswould forget swallowing.

I did not have chemo, only accelarated Radiotherapy and surgery. There were times that I regretted for rejecting PEG, But I survived and I did not experience any difficulty in swallowing following treatment.

1.I had soft boiled eggs, creamy home made soups with vegetables, broth and cream. I added protein and fibre supplements to the soups. I used lots of Nestle Resource 450 cal and 20 gr protein/237ml.

2 . I used mouthwash which contains lidocain and Nystatin before eating

    3. Took pain medication including morphine (short acting, just before meals)

    4. Mouth wash with baking soda.

    Good luck to your husbund.

    I have 7 rads left (of 35)

I have 7 rads left (of 35) and (as posted previously) opted not to get a feeding tube.

Starting week 4 I wondered if I made the wrong decision.

My throat has gotten so sore that I get great anxiety over the thought of eating. My calorie routine is pretty basic - 4 Boost Very High Calorie boxed drinks per day (530 calories each). I sometimes manage a protein shake to get my protein numbers up a bit. I follow each calorie drink with about 10oz of water. I can't manage the eggs, oatmeal or any other soft foods. The pain is simply not worth it for the relatively few calories.

I also get IV fluids once a week.

Between the extremely sore throat, coughing up bloody throat tissue and the insanely thick mucous, I've almost hit my limit.

My only hope is that by not using the feeding tube that my recovery will be quicker! Only time will tell.

    No PEG here!

I also did not have a PEG tube. I ask for one, but my doctor said no. He told me to get that idea out of my head. So I did! I had 30 radiation treatments to both sides of my neck as well as the back of my tongue. Without a doubt it was the hardest experience I ever had. I made it! Lost 50 lbs in the process. I am 11 months post radiation. My taste buds aren't quite what they used to be. I eat anything I want. Good Luck!
