Hello mucositis!

Well. That didn't take long.  3 chemos and 13 rads in and my mouth is killing me!  Mainly back of throat.  Gargling with baking soda & salt solution, biotene rinse and oragel rinse.    Only helps for a few minutes it seems.  I managed to suck down a spoon of honey and that brought some relief too.

Anything else I can try?

Keith

    Magic Mouthwash/ Chloroceptic Spray

My husband is just starting to get a bit of mucousitis, too.  He has been very fortunate as far as pain is concerned. He has been using a combo of ibuprofen, acetaminophin, tussin dm, saltwater rinses.  He also gets acupuncture three times a week and we think that helps a lot.  He just picked up a RX of magic mouthwash, but has not tried it yet.  Ask your doctor to prescribe that for you.  I've heard many members say it's a lifesaver.  Good luck on your journey... you are a third of the way there!

    Ask your doctor about

Ask your doctor about tetracaine lollipops.  They have to be made at a pharmacy that does coumpunds. The numbing effect doesn't last very long but it definitely helped my husband with eating and taking pills.

    12 Rads

Im 12 rads in taste has just about left the building and saliva is sort of working, same as you mouth is sore at the back.

Im using baking soda & salt mouth wash, Diflam mouth wash which has an anesthetic in it  I also find good old ice cream soothing. Im getting into the habbit of constantly sipping and swallowing small amounts of water

Pain meds at the moment are Solpadeine soluble tablets.

My Chemos different to yours I get 3 large doses of Cisplatin on day's 1, 22 & 43

    Taste

we got ice cream tonight and my husband could only taste the salt in the peanut butter (he got a peanut butter cup flurry). He couldn't taste the ice cream at all, but it felt good on his throat. :)

    the infamous week 3

    Hi Keith,

For me and not for everybody, my vintage of magic mouth wash worked great for throat, mouth and tongue discomfort.  Doctors use different formulas, but mine was very good.  I went through 6 bottles and I sipped, swished and swallowed every drop.  I used to take a hit of it in the parking lot of the rad center.  Magic mouth wash is on my top 3 side effect aids.

Do whatever you need to, to get through this.  Keep drinking water and swallowing and keep your nutrition up.

    Matt

mucousitis is no joke. It put

mucousitis is no joke. It put me in the hospital and I came out with a feeding tube.

I feel for ya. The magic mouthwash worked for me for 5 minutes. In the hospital they gave me a ketamine rinse that allowed me to speak for about an hour. Wouldn't send me home with it though.

Within a week or so after treatment ended my mouth healed.

    What worked for me

    Kevin,

Ask  your doctor about Muguard. My oncologist got me this product before I started my radiation. . I was the first of her patients to use it, and the only one that never got mucousitis. It is expensive, but the company paid for it.  You can read about it here: http://www.mugard.com/

Hope things get better for you.
