in Uterine/Endometrial Cancer #1

I plan to talk to my doctor soon about his future treatment recommendations.  I am hoping to get a reprieve from chemo at some point this summer and I want to find a destination for me and my husband to enjoy.  I hope this would be the beginning of a period for me to learn what my new normal is going to be.  In the past, we've done active vacationing involving biking and hiking.  Right now, I am not up to either activity due to fatigue and neuropathy but I don't want to deny hubby the activities he enjoys so much.  Neither of us is into cruise ships.  So, I'm looking for suggestions of destinations you've enjoyed either before or after treatment that offered ("handicapped") acessible scenic beauty and interesting tourist destinations that we could investigate and plan some travel.  This would be USA only; I don't feel confident leaving the country in my current status.  Thanks for any feedback.  And Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there.  Regards, oldbeauty

    Our favorite place is Seaside

    Our favorite place is Seaside, OR and the Oregon coast.  We get a hotel that is ocean view and it is only a short walk down to the beach.  We take lawn chairs along and sit on the beach and just watch the waves come it.  We have gone there several times between treatments.  The drive along the coast is spectacular.  There is a whale watching place along there. Seattle is close and there are many places there that you can visit without a lot of walking..  where ever you go you will have fun.

    Mountains or coast?

    One of my favorite places is Pajaro Dunes in California between Santa Cruz and Monterey.  The condos are right on the beach.  Depending on which of the three levels you are on, there may or may not be a few stairs, so I don't know if that is a dealbreaker.  There are roads to bike on among the strawberry fields and other non-freeway roads.  And you are within a half hour of both Santa Cruz, Monterey or Capitola, another cute little beach town.

    Or Lake Tahoe.  It's beautiful even if you don't gamble. There are numerous trails there for both walking and cycling. I remember doing some on crutches, so at least some are ADA.  Here's a link to some of the accessible trails.  http://www.wheelchairtraveling.com/visit-south-lake-tahoe-by-wheelchair-senior-handicap-accessible-travel/  Not that you are necessarily in a wheelchair, but easily traveled trails.

    Maybe Islands?

    If you're going to Seattle, you might want to consider the San Juan islands. There are many of them, and you can take a shuttle bus from SEATAC to Anacortes (plushy bus, about 2-3 hrs), then take the ferry from Anacortes. It's quite an adventure if you're not familiar with the whole area. My half-brother and his wife lived on San Juan island, but there are many lovely ones to choose from and the ferry goes to all of them via a somewhat convoluted schedule. To an LA person like myself, just riding a ferry is super exotic, not to mention the lovely scenery you see on the way. It does get busy during vacation time, though, so reservations would be a must. And, if you're inclined, it's a short trip over to British Columbia, too.

    cruises are available at Anacortes, too.  Many really cool things to do in the area.  I love the ferries.

    San Juan Island

    I'll jump on that bandwagon.  I vacationed on Orcas Island and took ferries to Friday Harbor, etc.  It is beautiful, and if you are going to be in the Seattle area anyway, it's a short hop.

    Great Idea!

    Funny, I just started looking at the San Juan Islands yesterday when I looked at what some escorted bike tour companies were offering as a way to get some ideas.  I have two travel books on SJI coming to me from the library now.  They look like a real winner of a destination.  Now, I just have to get the good word from the doctor that I am cleared for travel.  Thanks again for the ideas.     A few miles away from me, this sign is at the beginning of Hwy. 50.  Always cracks me up.  A little longer drive for me!
