I think I just dodged a bullet

I have just come home from a colonoscopy. I was not particularly happy when my GI told me at my last scope that I did not need another for three years. I thought that was too long but she insisted that i did not need one at two years. Unfortunately the cost of private health insurance in Australia has gone thru the roof and as much as i hated to do it ,I could no longer afford private health insurance. My nephrologist referred me for the scope as the three years were up added to the fact that I was on long term powerful immuno suppressants . The public system is very slow and it took a further six months to get to the head of the que. I was pretty nervous when I went in today and the GI knew it. He came and saw me when I woke up and I could see he was not as confident as when I went in. He removed four polyps , the largest of which was 11 mm and the smallest 4mm. He removed them all and had to put three staples in the hole left by the 11mm one. He thinks they are ok but he has sent them all for biopsy so I won't know for a week.

I guess the moral of the story is don't let your doctors make decisons about your health that you are not comfortable with. I should have insisted. In my mind it is unforgivable to develop a new primary cancer when you have survived for nearly twenty years. Ron.

    Let's hope the biopsy is

Let's hope the biopsy is clear Ron. I know the waiting is a very anxious time and nothing can make it easier. Twenty years is a long time so hears to 20 more.

    Keeping good thoughts

Let us know how it goes!  It has to be negative after all these years, right? I'm hoping...

Praying for good results!  It would be very difficult to face new tumors when you have survived for so long.  I am very glad to hear they got all the polyps.  Please let us know what you find out from the biopsy.

    Thanks Traci

It concerns me that an eleven mm polyp has grown to that size in just three years but there again my first primary was described as frightfuly aggressive. Good luck with your latest challenge. I hope they are easy to get at with no mets, Ron.

    Thanks Gail

Things happen . Gi's scheduled my last sope at three years. I wasn't happy about it but she was not inclined to change it. I ran out of private insurance and had to go public. The backlog there took me out to three and a half years. I knew there was things in there I just hoped they had not turned. When I was told the largest polyp was 11 mm I was really concerned , they don't normally get to that size in three years. I was just lucky they were tubular adenomas , they can turn but are considered the least likely. My latest GI did not expect to find any. He has assured me I will never go beyond two years on future scopes. Perhaps a lesson for all of us , Hugs ron.
