A heartfelt thank you

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

I posted here a few months ago for the first time as a distraught mother of a son who was diagnosed with Stage 4 scc HPV related cancer.

I received so much support and advice (advice that I provided to my son) and I just wanted to say thank you to all the warriors here who are going through this battle and who have conquered this battle. All of the advice and kind words meant more to me than anything.

My son has been 5 weeks out of his chemo and radiation treatments. He had 36 radiation treatments and 3 chemo treatments. He had been receiving the treatments in Winnipeg (I live in Toronto) but he came home when he was too weak to take care of himself any longer. In the first week he could not eat or drink much. In week 2 he was eating some food. In week 3 he was at the gym working out, eating like he was starving and by the 4th week he gained 30 pounds and now in week 5 he is back at work doing rebar work.

He saw his doctor in Winnipeg today. The doctor said he was surpised by the quick recovery. He has two very small tumors left. We are hoping the radiation has killed them. On May 4th he gets all his tests done and at worse he may have to have a neck dissection. He is a changed person (for the better) and values life and people far more now.

To all the warriors going through your battles, you are loved and valued. Thank you all so much for the help and advice, and that you for the support.

    I have been wondering about

    I have been wondering about your story on an off since I first read it.  In fact, your story and the the responses are what helped me decide to join.  My husband is almost done with treatments.  7 more to go!  I love hearing that your son is doing so well!  It truly is a miracle.  Keep us updated once in awhile!

    Way to go.

     Good for him, great recovery and pray for it to be gone. Our story is similar that I stayed with my mother during my treatments. 35 radiation and 7 chemo. HPV- Tonsil stage 4 cancer. My treatments were in a town 2 hours from where I live so I satyed with her to be closer for treatments. Mothers and care givers are angels. Can't say Thanks enough for the care I got. I want to start a thread to thank all the spouses, family, girlfriends, boyfriends who stay at our side to care for us during this time. They go through an emotional roller coaster the same as us. Tell him to stay positive and keep smiling. My 3 month PET scan came back clean. so all is good.

    Similar Situation

    It's so nice when we have family near a hospital.  My husband will be starting treatment in Boston and will be staying with his daughter during the week so he doesn't have to commute every day.  (She lives much closer to Boston than we do).  It will be good because she will be able to help with the caregiving and between the two of us, we are less likely to experience caregiver burnout.  And of course we both love my husband and will both make sure he is doing what he needs to do so he can get through treatment and heal as quickly as possible.

    That's wonderful! It will be so helpful for all ofyou that there are two caregivers and not just one.  Any help is wonderful.  Glad you're back on the forum :)
