same kidney.
My son is 5 years out from a partial. chromophobe t1a. They have been watching scar tissue and site. This year was just an untrasound. Dr. wants a ct scan because what they thought was scar tissue is more prominate. If rcc comes back to same spot is it considered stage 4?

Don't jump the gun.
ginger,
From your post the doctor wants a better look. There have been some with partials where the partial does not work. You are not there yet. I do not believe that it is Stage 4 if it has not spred beyond the kidney and there is no suggestion of that in your post. Hopefully the CT which is the Gold standard for follow up will sort this out The reason for the Ultrasound is that he was at low risk and it is usually good enough to spot something in the bud or spot something that maybe nothing, but needs to be double checked. As a layman please take my comments as thoughts rather than rely on them for medical advice.

Thank ypu Icemantoo, you are kind to answer my question. Hoping and praying it's scar tissue, if not ct. scans for the last 4 yrs. have missed it.

I can understand how the
I can understand how the doctors (radiologist?) wants to be certain as to what it is he /she is looking at from the Ultrasound. They do not want to miss anything which is good. But it may just be nothing and you'll find relief. So try really hard not to project what it "could be" until you know the facts and have a plan.
I know, i know, easier said than done. Cancer has a reputation of making us have a little PTSD signs at times.
Sending you calming healing thoughts. Count your blessings, LIVE your life and you'll get answers soon enough.
Hugs, Jan

Not stage 4
Hi Ginger,
If this does turn out to be "something" other than scar tissue than more than likely it will still be stage 1. It's rare but sometimes there could be residual disease from the first surgery or that could have been a second tumor at the time of surgery that was too small to be seen. Regardless it would still be stage 1 and treated as such.
I suspect this is just scar tissue and a normal post partial nephrectomy finding via U/S. I think that a radiologist can’t tell scar tissue from new tumor growth because there is no contrast medium to help “shed light” on the tissue in question. Like Iceman said CT is the gold standard for kidney cancer, not U/S.
Hang in there.

The ct scan was yesterday, appointment tomorrow. As the Mother I want my son to call today but he will wait until tomorrow. I want to go with him but he says there is no need.

Hi Ginger
I hope and pray that it is just scar tissue or nothing. The waiting is the hardest part to quote Tom Petty. Love and prayers coming for you and your son.

scan results.
I just got the call. What the ultra sound found was just scar tissue. CT scan showed final results. Next year dr. will try untrasound again, then ct. scan.
I thank God.

Yay!
Yay for scar tissue.
At least it wasn't "an artifact" on the film. I got one of those on an x-ray once and knew I was done for. My insurance would have never covered a referral to an archaeologist.
Hugs to you and yours - hope you're doing something to destress and celebrate!
