4 days since surgery - first post

in Kidney Cancer #1

i found this forum last month after diagnosis, looked around a little and got freaked out. Now that the surgery is over I feel so much better ano a little braver to read about everybody's stories. I had a radical nephrectomy on my right kidney Thursday. My surgeon used the DaVinci method so I have 8 incisions, but I am home and doing fairly well. Trying to avoid pain pills after hearing stories about the constipation issue. My tumor was 5.6 cm and stage 1. I have a catheter which is a pain in the butt and hoping to feel better when they take that out. I was happy to see a post on here because I was having some weird shoulder pain and now realize it was probably from the gas. Anyway, thank you all for posting your stories and sharing your journeys. I plan to visit often.

    Welcome to the club no one in their right mond would volunteer to join. May you recover well. No long hikes until your body says it is ready.

    First of all I love your user name! You go and get em now! Glad you are past the surgery and on your way to recovery. Not sure why you still have a catheter in, do you? I was lucky. Mine was taken out before I even woke up from surgery. Yeah, that trapped gas pain was difficult and downright painful to deal with, but soon that will pass too, (pun intended I guess. LOL)

    Keep us informed as to how you are doing if you like. You'll be monitored now for several years, but maybe that little c bugger is now out of your body.

    Your tumour was a little bigger than mine but I also had the radical right job.

    Mine was 7 weeks ago and I am walking easily again. I was pretty tired and lazy for a while, which was ok. I feel less like walking than I used to but I think I just got a bit soft from sitting around.

    I think the catheter is in to

    I think the catheter is in to keep a close eye on the bladder function as they took a little piece of that where it connects to the ureter. I go in Thursday for a bladder X-ray and to get it out, can't wait.  We moved to SC a year and 1/2 ago from Florida after retirement and we got into hiking. I just love it and can't wait to get back in the woods again.  Even to just be able to walk a half mile would be very restorative for me.

    I like the lazy part. We deserve it but I hope the tiredness doesn't last too long.

    I am glad you are done with the surgery! Walk as much as you can when you feel up to it. Don't push it, just little walks until you feel you can do more. Sounds like you will do great!

    Hi Ellen

    I was walking at only a moderate pace and not too far for several weeks.

    My tiredness was uneven. Some days I had short walks and long naps and other days something different.

    But my calendar was clear so I decided to take things very very easy.

    Catheter out and I feel 100%

    Catheter out and I feel 100% better. I think I have one muscle in the front of my stomach that hurts like mad when it is strained but otherwise all is good.
