Googling

The only thing we don't want people to search for with google is survival stats for kidney cancer.

Fair enough... But a blanket ban on googling anything is too strong a restriction.

A lot of rubbish shows up on google searches but there are vast amounts of good information too.

The pubmed database is searchable online, for example. Does an article become rubbish just because a google search pointed to it?

Google led me to a page that listed the recurrence rate for stage 1 grade 2 after nephrectomy as 2%.

Is that about right?

Steve.

    Google

I just decided from diagnosis that I wouldnt go on google. This maybe because, as a history teacher, I kept finding students reading hate filled nonsense from the dark side of of the web. I didnt expect a lot more from Google and when I did look I found a bunch of nutters and snake oil salesmen.

    Best avoided

    Counter example

I know you're right about cancer treatments and cancer stats and other stuff too, but... The internet is still a valuable resource and sometimes it is your best friend.

My counter example is regarding type 2 diabetes. Diabetes association websites typically say that diabetes is a progressive disease and recommend a moderate carbohydrate diet to eat while you are slowly dying.

But the standard advice is just plain wrong for almost everyone with diabetes.

Diabetes is one case where the alternative is better than the mainstream.

A good starting point is to google 'low carb diet for diabetes'.

I'll leave it there. I can crap on about this for hours and most people aren't interested (even people in danger of losing eyes, limbs or kidney function).

    Googling

We all got to this site with google. That I hope is a good thing. I hope we all take everything with a grain of salt as there is both good and bad stuff on the internet. The objective is to have an open andd critical mind in what we read and absorb.

And of course everyone who arrives here is frightened so helping with that must be the highest priority.
