Newly Diagnosed
Newly diagnosed at age 66, went to BS and they want to remove the cells. Everything I've read says it is very slow growing and surgery is not always necessary. She said I'm stage 1. I'm petrified of any surgery. My family is pushing me to have the surgery. Can anyone elaborate on the surgery? I've haven't had much surgery, tonsils, tubal, that's it in my whole life. I think it's the anesthesia that really worries me. My mind is overwhelmed and just won't stop! I know I'm lucky it was caught so early and I'm lucky it's only stage 1 but ..... Thank you in advance.

Early detection
You are lucky to have caught this early. You are probably in shock right now so take a few days to think. I'm with your family. Better to get a few cells removed that wait until it becomes a tumor! Breast surgery is so routine these days. My sister got similar surgery and felt fine the same day. Good luck!

I was at the opposite end of
I was at the opposite end of the spectrum-- I couldn't wait to have the cancer taken out. If the surgeon had said it was necessary to remove my arm as well, I would have gladly lost an arm. A cancer diagnosis is like being hit by a truck. Your mind is racing and your adrenelin (sp?) is on overdrive. My lumpectomy was an easy surgery. No scar, no bandage, and no resulting pain. The anesthesia - well after numerous sleepless nights worrying about the diagnosis, it was a well deserved sleep. I think the surgery was worth it. Get all the info you can before you make a decision.

just one week from lumpectomy and doing fine
Hi copygirl--Anesthesiologists really know what they are doing these days -- there's nothing to it, except leaving yourself in their hands--I woke up alert, no pain, and actually feeling a little refreshed! One week since surgery I am really feeling fine - need to get a front zip bra (or 2) and shirts that button or zip up the front. But that is about you will need. Oh, and you will need some cornstarch to put under your arm when it chafes against a shirt. Just a dab. There's lots of good advice here on this website -- I know it's easy for me (or anyone) to say, but try not to worry - these experts really know what they are doing. Looking forward to hearing of your progress. We all stick together here.
