New Diagnosis Question

Hi everyone, I was recently diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in situ of the endocervical glands after having a colposcopy / biopsy done.  My doctor performed a LEEP procedure to determine whether the cancer is non-invasive or invasive, and I am awaiting the results.  I was told that they would be performing a hysterectomy next (as long as it came back non-invasive) to prevent re-occurance.  If it comes back invasive, I am guessing that I'll need a different type of procedure.

My question is this...right now, I've only been seeing my regular gynecologist.  I trust him, and feel that he is providing me with a good course of action.  However, I can't help but wonder if I should be seeing an gynecologic oncologist?  Or get a 2nd opinion?  

What action did you ladies take when you were first diagnosed?  What would you recommend?  Part of me feels that I should seek out additional opinions, but the other part of me doesn't want to overreact.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    PLEASE go to a gynecologic

    PLEASE go to a gynecologic oncologist.  They are a gynecologist who has taken a few years of extra training specifically for cancer of they female reproductive organs.  I love my gyn too and I thank her every day for recommending me to a gyn onc.  They know what to look for and what they are looking at.  Please ask her for the name of a gyn onc in your area and follow up with them.  

    Please don't hesitate to ask any questions.

    Second opinions

    A second opinion can be helpful in more ways than one. It can help confirm the diagnosis, get more information about treatment options in order to make a decision, and much more. Good doctors understand that seeking a second opinion doesn't mean you don't trust them, rather, it's a best practice and often welcomed.

    And yes, it's important to see a specialist as NoTimeForCancer mentioned if at all possible. The earlier the better. They provide a level of expertise other oncologists or a regular gynecologist does not have training and experience in.

    This forum is one place to start for getting names of gynecologic oncologist. The Foundation for Women's Cancer has a gynecologic oncologist search tool as does the Society of Gynecologic Oncology on their website. Healthgrades or Castle Connolly's are sites for finding ratings so you can research and look for the best doctor possible.
