Confused about mammogram results

Hi, I am currently a Head & neck cancer patient at MDA in Houston, and got my first three month scan which was NED.

 

because my mother died from breast cancer and four of her sisters have it as well, plus my aunt and her daughter on father's side, I was advised to have a diagnostic mammogram at MDA. Just got the results and they reported a mass on the right breast, and another on the left near the Nipple. They advised further testing by ultrasound.  I will have this done, but should I be worried? Is this standard procedure?

    Mammogram results

    Hi, Lise -- welcome to our little pink corner of CSN!

    I had my first mammogram when I turned 40 back in 2009, and, unfortunately, I was diagnosed with breast cancer soon thereafter.  

    At the time, the radiologist explained to me that the next step after a mass is discovered on a mammogram is to do an ultrasound, because an ultrasound can tell them whether the mass is fluid-filled or solid.  He explained that, if it's fluid-filled, it's likely a benign cyst.  If it's solid, the next step after that would be to do a biopsy, which would determine whether or not it's cancer.  There are several different kinds of biopsies, depending on where the mass is located in the breast, and what type of equipment the radiologist will need to use.

    I'm not a medical professional in any way, and this is probably an oversimplification of things, but that's the simplified way my radiologist explained it to me.

    You have all my positive thoughts that the ultrasound shows nothing to worry about, and you can just go on dancing with NED!
