One Week Out
I'm one week out from my surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. At this point they believe they can do a robotic assisted partial. The nodule/mass is coming out the bottom of the kidney which is a good position for a partial. Based on the images they took, they believe it is still within the kidney so they believe it is stage 1. As you know I will meet with the doctor on Thursday and go over the final plan. In my original chest scan they did find a small nodule on my thyroid. The doctor said it doesn't look like anything to worry about but they will do an ultrasound on Thursday morning. I hope to have results of that by the time I meet with the doctor in the afternoon. I know there is a slim chance it is RCC, but there have been posts on this board of people having RCC travel to their thyroid. Keeping my fingers crossed that it hasn't traveled.
I'm going into this surgery with a good understanding of what's ahead. I'm also following the advice of Fox by continuing to run right up to surgery date. I should have good lung capacity, which will help post-surgery. I'm sure I'll post again prior to Friday--if not I'll update you when the little monster is out.

Friday
Thanks Foots and Ree--I'm feeling pretty good about next Friday. I suppose all of us get nervous when we approach surgery--it's certainly not something that is considered "fun". But this is necessary. Dr. Chow and his team did put me at ease when I met with them last week. There is some uncertainty with the small nodule on my thyroid, but I'm trying not to think about it too much.
I do appreciate your comments as they do have an impact. Take care!

Hoping that all goes well for
Hoping that all goes well for you! It is a scary thought when it all is just ahead of you, but it is surprising how smoothly it goes. Before you know it you will be posting about how well you are feeling and doing!
I, too, have had thyroid issues....multinodular goiter. I have had it for at least 10 years. Although biopsies came back clear, it is becoming quite bothersome and uncomfortable - I went to an ENT, and he went through the pros and cons of the surgery. I told him that I had had advanced stage RCC, and before any other words came out, he dropped his head and said "kidney cancer is known to spread to the thyroid". I was so relieved to know that he was readily aware of that. My oncologist knew and encouraged that this be taken care right away. It has been a long, tiring battle just to get this looked at. (I live in Canada). But the thyroid is coming out in the fall. I look forward to not feeling pressure, and being able to swallow without discomfort and having energy again! Hoping your thyroid nodule comes back negative - at least they are on it! Take care!

Thanks
Thanks for the words of encouragement sblair and Jojo. Laura, thank you for your prayers--I always welcome them.
Jojo, do you have a date of surgery for your thyroid? Good luck with it. Looking at the scans my doctor said he wasn't too concerned about it, but wanted to make sure so he scheduled an U.S. I ,too, hope it is nothing and I can go into surgery focusing on just the mass coming out.
Take care,
