Frustrated

I walk into the hospital this morning to a terrified Dad. He has diarrhea that is pure bright red blood. He can not sir up without feeling like he is going to pass out.

I ask his nurse if the doctor has been in. The nurse says that they have made several phone calls and no one has called him back yet.  This has already been going on for two hours now.

So I walked across the street to the oncologist to see if they can help. I was told to stand at the nurses station and do not leave until I get a doctor in his room. He needs attention immediately.

I did what the oncologist advised me to do. I stood at the nurses station and declared that "I want a doctor in my Dad's room now. If you do not produce a doctor now. I will go room to room to find this man and drag him back to my dad's room by the balls."

I did get what I asked for.

Now I am playing the waiting game. You know the one. Hurry up and run the test so we can sit here and wait for the results before they can do anything.

Sorry everyone... I just needed to vent..

    How Frustrating.....

Sorry to hear what is happening with your dad.....I am assuming he is in that particular hospital because his doctors are affiliated with that one.  Through my own experience with family members' hospital stays and with my own, it is clear that hospitals are understaffed and nurses/aides are overworked.  It is important for the patient to have a family member or friend stay as long as possible during the patient's hospital stay to help with all possible.  My method of attempting to get immediate assistance is to smother folks with kindness......why would anyone not want to help the nicest people that cross their path?  Good luck and hope your dad's condition improves very quickly!

I agree with you 100% Mary.

I agree with you 100% Mary.

Normally I am very nice to everyone at the hospital. They treat us very well here.

However when my Dad's nurse can not get anyone to call them back and I have the oncologist telling me to get a doctor in his room immediately. Well like I told the nurse... what can I do for you that will help you get the help my Dad needs.

This is the 2nd time at this hospital where the nurses hands were tied because they could not get a doctor to respond to their phone calls.

It is rare that I become a ****.

I also agree that a patient needs a family member or a friend to stay with them. I am at the hospital from 8am to 11pm everyday. Dad is 74 and being sick he has a hard time understanding what they tell him. I stay here to help him with his needs and to explain to him what the doctors are telling him.

Thank you for your well wishes. I hope all is well with you also.

    Hang on

You have been such a good caregiver and have really been through it.  Your father has been so up and down in his fight, I know you are frustrated.  We are here for you and vent anytime.  We are hoping the best for your father and our prayer is that he won't give up and that the doctors will do their job.  Your father should be a priority right now.

    Thinking of you today, Becky

    Thank you Becky!

    Thank you Becky!

Having a good day today. Dad lost a lot of blood yesterday. Theh had to do a transfusion. Today the bleeding has stopped. He feels a lot better.

Test results show that he no longer has c-diff. They have no idea why he was bleeding so much yesterday.

I guess on a journey such as this we don't always have answers.

I pray for the day that no one will ever have to take a journey like this.

    Good to hear....

Good to hear your dad had a better day on Saturday. As Becky said, you have been such a wonderful caregiver and advocate for your father!  He is extremely lucky! I thank my husband and sons every day for all they do and have done to make my life easier through the ups and downs of my health.  I truly believe that in so many situations, the cancer diagnosis is harder mentally and physically on the family members.  Be sure to do whatever you are able to take good care of yourself while you care for your dad and his needs.  Will keep you both in my prayers!
