Ileostomy

I'm looking for some experiences wit ileostomy, and specially recovering time

 

My mum had his colon removed in 2014 but not the rectum. After a year a half they discovered thar the "joint" between ileum and rectum is wrong and causing infections. There is a big fistula too. Everything is wrong. Only solution to remove rectum and put a bag

Some months ago Doctors thougth antibiotics would keep the area clean while on chemo but they were wrong. She has been suffering infections for the last 6 months. 

The worst part is she had a reocurrence in December ( "just"Small spots in her liver) and must keep chemo. Now chemos is stopped.

Only solution is to do a ileostomy . We are devastated. In her hospital don't want to do such an agressive surgery to her.

We are looking for second a thrid opinions. She is in good shape and young and strong enough to keep figthing

 

Well, the main thing is Any experieces in ilesomies? How long did it take to recover to get  back to chemo? Would be great to know your stories

Is an ileostomy so aggresive? Will she be able to keep chemo after the ileostomy?

We are worried

    Connecting the ileum directly to the rectum is not the greatest of ideas. The flow to the rectum will be constant, watery, and very acidic.

    Fistulas happen. Life is not kind.

    Having an Ileostomy does not in any way, shape, or manner, equate to "devastation". I have had one since 2006. Big deal.

    I have never, ever heard of an "aggressive" Ileostomy; I have absolutely no idea what you could possibly referring to.

    Get other opinions from colorectal surgeons that ARE NOT of the same group or organization.

    Chemo damages the immune system. Antibiotics can not always offset the damage. It's all part of having cancer.

    You should really take the time to educate yourself regarding cancer. You and your family's support is needed and you will not be able to provide any support without having an understanding of the problem.

    WE are having this second opinion as you say, but it means going to a 500 kms far hospital. Going up and down with my mother is not the best but seems to be the only solution.

    In the hospital my mother is treated they say ileostomy is extremely aggressive. AS you sais, best thing is to get a second and third opinion

    Ileostomy seems to be the best option. We have been in hospital 3,5 months for the last 8 months
