Some laughs at my compromised speech mistakes...

Sometimes I feel a bit embarrased about my less than perfect speech post-rads (and the knowledge that it's not really going to improve much beyond my 90% recoup...but then something happens to make me laugh about that.  And two funny things definitely happened recently.

 

While I was eating lunch last week (and I always get slurry during meals) my co-worker asked me how my weekend was.  I said it was great and we had a surprise party "for my friend who's now a citizen."  And he says, WOW, was she a guy before?  And I say what the hell are you talking about...she became a citizen.  To which he replies, oh, I thought you said she had a sex change.  And we both fell over laughing. 

 

Later that evening I got an email from a friend who was at the party saying "sorry to hear Judy's dad died, can you give me her address for a sympathy card."  WHAT??? he's still alive and kicking! And I wrote her saying maybe you heard "Judy can't be here because it's Fathers Day" as "Judy can't be here because her father died." And she writes back, yup, that's exactly what happened.

 

So two good laughs in one day...and I posted this to (maybe) help others see that there is humor in our compromised speech and we shouldn't fret about it as much as we do!

    Here's two more good ones like that

    I had a left jaw resection two years ago.  About a year ago I was explaining what that was to a friend, and told him "They took the fibula out of my left leg and grafted into my left jaw."  Without missing a beat he asked, "Is that why you talk with a limp?"

    Another friend said, "Well, you put your foot in your mouth a lot, so now it's just closer."

    With friends like those...

    Mike, that's hilarious!!!

    My kinda friends!  I love people who make you laugh...hate it when people tiptoe around, all PC-like.  Cancer is evil and laughter is the best medicine for sure.  Thanks for posting those funnies!

    AN "OOPS" MOMENT FOR ME

    My speech is normally good enough to get me through most situations, but I did recently have one of those “oops” moments. After taking a client to lunch, I said “Good seeing you. We have to get together again sometime soon”.

    What he thought I said was “You useless turd, I had hoped you would have choked to death on your lunch and with any luck the bus will run you over on your way out.”

     I guess I still need a few more speech therapy sessions.

    I laughed like hell at your post...great!!! And isn't that what we would all love to say at times? Or "Thanks for inviting me to your fourth wedding, loser...we're taking bets on how many months this one will last." Sorry, garbled speech.

    With a big 2 inch hole in my soft palate and a dead tongue it really makes talking very very hard. But I find people who understand and see I am doing the best I can will go out of the way and help me. I was at the Roatan air port in February and the guy behind the counter could see how hard it was for me to talk, so when he finished checking me in he took me all the way through the security check points so I would not have any problems. Then when it was time to board the plane he called me to come up and let me go on first. Wow that just made me feel so good to know people do care.
