possible osseous metastatic lesion on anterior second rib

in Breast Cancer #1

Hi everyone

I had breats cancer - invasive ductal - right side 2012 and had a mastectomy. 10 months later it showed up in my arm pit on the same side - right side - agressive breast cancer. My oncologist office wasn't going to test it. said it was a lymph node. U/S showed something so I had it biopsied. Had more surgery to remove breast tissue and then had radiation. Due to the new health care laws, my only follow up has been blood work. CEA level went up last fall twice so they did a CT in December. Found non calcified 7 mm lung nodule and recommended 3 month follow up. lung nodule didn't grow so considered stable - but oncologist wrote benign on report - radiologist wrote - close follow up recommended. So now I have another 3-6 months to wait and see.

Radiologist also found "possible osseous metastatic lesion on right anterior second rib"

Oncologist doesn't seem concerned. I am going to ask for a biopsy on the rib lesion on my next visit to her.

I don't want to wait another 3-6 months to wait and see.

Anyone have something like this happen to them?

    Not to me 'yet' but if I was

    Not to me 'yet' but if I was you I would be demanding a thorough look, biopsies or whatever they are able to do especially to the rib. I hope someone else chips in, I am sure they will be of help.

    ROZ I will chip in

    and totally agree. If you feel you need it done sooner, don't wait.  I went to ER with pain in my ribs and chest, thought it may be pleursey or pneumonia,  ER Dr. said pulled muscle, I knew it was more, so went to onco, he saw the xray and figured I would be calling. Xray showed something on my bones.  You know your body.  If something doesn't feel right, then push for whatever you need.

    When I was first diagnosed in 2002, I waited too long.  I was told by gynecologist the year prior if I got another lump, if it didn't change then dont worry about it.  I had a cyst the year before.  This didn't feel any different in January than it did in August but I was at my primary doctor so I showed it to him.  He said it wasn't good and felt like cancer.  Sent me the next morning for a mammogram.  Had an U/S when it showed in he mammogram. They called in the radiologist, he looked at the ultrasound and said he was 99.9% positive it was cancer.

    Bottom line is be your own advocate, no one knows your body as well as you do. Don't wait 3_6 months if you are not comfortable. If it is nothing, that's always the bonus.

    Wish they would be more aggressive

    Please keep us posted as I just heard today that I have a couple of lung nodules showing on CT and they want to "watch them" and repeat CT in 6 months.  Prayers.

    I'd want to know

    I think we do grow things (body junk) that are not cancer and most of us have some of those things.  But you have already had one recurrence and are nervous.  One sure way to know if these things are cancerous without putting you through a biopsy, is they will grow.  I thnk that's why the 3 month wait.  To see if they grow and change.  I don't know what I'd do if I was you, but sitting around on pins and needles for the next 3 months is not good under any circumstances.  I suggest you have a frank discussion with you oncologist and let her know your fears and whether proceeding with a biopsy now is the right way to go for you.  Biopsies are invasive and can be painful.  The treatment (I think) will be same whether it is cancer today or cancer 3 months from now.  Staying away from chemo is not a bad thing.

    Thank you everyone

    I'm going to see my oncologist tomorrow morning.

    After looking up where the 2nd anterior rib is, I realize this is the exact place I told the nurse practitioner last October about. There is a palpable lump there on my rib, but the sonographer said it was part of my rib and nothing to worry about. Actaully she couldn't find anything and had to ask for help from another sonographer who also said it was part of my rib. So I stopped worrying about it because what could I do? Nothing.

    Well now that it has be identified on a CT, I think it is something that my oncologist will take more seriously. At least I hope so.

    I will give an update after tomorrow's appt.
