I never have smokedrhondap45042 said:Smoking
Not that it really matters, because Dave and I quit smoking day of Dx but just wondered how many in here smoked prior to Dx. Just wondering if this kind of cancer is normally found in smokers. Not finger pointing just trying to educate myself. Dave and I have been reading about the HPV virus. Should your other get vaccinated for this or once you get it is it a done deal.
I have the P16 marker.

surgery vs treatment.Dave45042 said:thanks
Thanks for that info, I also want the tumor out of me, I will have to check on what options my Dr. will go for and if not satisfied find a new one. As I first stated my mother had the radiation and chemo first and it didnt help, then they removed the tumor but it grew back within weeks. I would have a better peice of mind with the tumor removed and then follow up treatments.
Hi Dave, so sorry about your news. My husband has BOT and neck tumor. His is a very rare type not usually found in this area. (Neuroendocrine). Each doctor he was told him the same thing. that surgery was not advised because it would destroy a large amount of the tongue. This could also cause loss of speech, problems with speaking and eating. Basically, his quality of life would be very poor.
We live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, but also got a second opinion at Memorial Sloan Kettering. They confirmed the diagnosis (they see 1 case like his every 7-8 years!!) They suggested both chemo and radiation (as did our local doctors). They also stated that they could offer us nothing other than our local doctors and that they felt doing it local would be easier for my husband as excessive travelling for treatment would further tire him.
My advice to you is ask your new doctor why he/she doesn't want to do surgery. Next, ask him/her if he thinks a second would be good and where to get it. When we asked our oncologist, he highly recommended getting one for our won peace of mind.
Depending on where you live, there will probabley be several centers that can give you their opinion. Our oncologist mentioned MSK, also Fox Chase and U of PA in Philadelphia.
Most importantley, it is imparative that you trust your doctor and as questions.
Good luck to you. You will be in my prayers.
