In recovery mode

in Kidney Cancer #1

I had my surgery on 1/26, so I am a little over 2 weeks post-op.  Everything went as expected, and my pain has decreased everyday.  I have had more pain last night & today with no real explanation as to why, but I am just trying to rest more.  Having my 3 year old home with me is trying, and she is with her dad for a few days so I am hoping that will help me rest a little better.  My surgery took almost 7 hours, but they got all of the tumor. & about 25% of my kidney.  I have a 10 inch incision--crazy big! It hurt like a mother getting the staples out!!!

 My follow up scan will be in 6 months.  For those of you that have required surgery only, do you follow up with an oncologist or a urologist?

    That wasn't so bad was it? OK it hurts a litte. OK more than a little,My tumor was a similar size and my follow up was with the Urological Surgeon who also had a sub specialty in Oncology. Others may suggest a Oncologist referral. See what your pathology is. There is no one size fits all and others on this board swear by their Oncologist.

    ....it's done, hopefully they got it all.  My doctor is a Urologic Oncologist so I have a 2-fer so to speak.

    My surgeon is a urologic

    My surgeon is a urologic oncologist also so I too am a 2-fer.

    is dependent on whom you ask. Too many urologists say you don't need an oncologist. I say that once the diagnosis is cancer, only an oncologist will do. It is a better idea to take your Mustang to a Ford dealer for repairs than to a Chevy dealer. You can't let them say you don't need an oncologist because, "They got it all" and you no longer have cancer. If you have had alcohol issues 30 years ago but no longer drink, aren't you still an alcoholic? I see this a lot from celebrities, politicians, etc. And if you have ever had mental health issues, you are always a psych patient. If lucky, no manifestations occur. But should anything not remain perfect, it is off to see the wizard. Only a specialist will do. Have you a cancer diagnosis? See an oncologist.

    Lucky u your tumor is what a lot of us would consider being  small with your chances of a recurrence being slim to none.U Could choose to see an oncologist but all they could do at this juncture is to educated u concerning kidney cancer.Considering your diagnosis a urologist and or oncologist would follow the same protocol and that would probably be u getting a C T scan every 6 months for the next five years.

    I wish u a speedy recovery I think u have been blessed your cancer was discovered at a very early stage.

    Glad it is all behind you now. Good advice given regarding oncologist vs urologist. I have a uro-oncologist.

    And Foxy....very well said. When I hear the words "we got it all" it actually sends terror throughout my body. So many stories of "we got it all" and then wham-o! But you do have to stay positive and stay in the fight!
