Lump
hi all!
i was diagnosed with rcc in July 2015. I had a laparoscopic nephotomy in November 2015. I know it's only been three month but I still have numbness from the top of my thigh all the way up to my chest. i am over weight but since my surgery I have the dreaded lump that I have read others have since their surgery. Does this ever go away? Will I ever get feeling back in my leg and stomach area? Please help!

Welcome
Sissy,
Sorry you had to join us here. We are a club that welcomes new members, none of whom are here by choice.
First raise the concern about this "lump" with your doctor to make sure there is no medical concern.
To me it sounds like a buldge which is one of those free perks from a neph. Mine stuck around as a pretty good lump for much of the first year. It still is present to some extent 13 and 1/2 lucky years later.
Finally take ownership of this new beauty mark and carry it or whats left of it as a symbol of pride.

I would definitely discuss the numbness with your doctor, I also had laparscopic surgery but no numbness.
You referred to a lump but didn't say where it is located. I would suggest discussing that with your doctor as well, sometimes you can be left with a hernia.
I hope this helps and keep us posted as to what you find out.
Good luck,
Donna~

My lump has stuck around.....luckily I happen to have some other lumps to keep it company. My doctor told me to massage it, but it only helped a bit. I think of it as my souvenir (it goes nicely with the nephrectomy scar!)
However, I would check with your doctor regarding your numbness.

Lump
i had my surgery back in November 2015. I also had two post op follow up appointments with dr since. He blew off my numbness around stomach area. He said he didn't know why I have numbness in my upper thigh as there were no incisions made down that far. As for my lump, he said I should go buy an exercise belt that might help hold the bulge down. Nerves and muscles were cut. Very annoyed to say the least!

Either a rupture or trapped gas. It will go away after a while. In the meantime it's a rather good conversation piece.

I had an cryoablation in October 2015. I continue to suffer with numbness and swelling in my upper thigh area and stomach near the involved kidney, and it is very painful. Saw urological oncologist mid January and he to was not very interested in my problem. He did refer me to a chiropractor who may be able to work with the area to help. I have not yet seen the chiropractor as my husband is not a fan of them. I have a brother who is a general surgeon in New Orleans and he told me that even with the procedure I had, nerves, etc. were involved and some damage was obviously done. Apparently, this is mostly unavoidable during surgery. If I am lucky this will resolve, who knows when, or it may last forever. I cannot imagine living with this. I have had to buy a larger size in pants and shirts and this does not make me happy.
I hope you get relief soon. These last four months have been miserable.

If by lump you mean a bulge around the incision site, yes, I had one and it's still there to a much smaller degree 1 1/2 years later. I call it a little sausage and if it's the only thing that's left after my partial neph, I'll take it. I also had numbness from upper thigh to hip but that went away a few months later. Nerves have been cut and it takes a while for them to regenerate. You're just 2 months out of surgery so it's possible it'll take another couple of months. In any case, always discuss concerns with your surgeon/oncologist.

i know exactly how you feel. I, too, have had to resort to larger size clothing. I am extremely self conscious about this football that I am now carrying around on the right side of my body. I wish someone would have told me about this.

drumroll please: a lump or cancer. There are 7 layers of muscle and facia that have to be penetrated, not to mention contact with nerve endings or possibly severed nerves. In a lap surgery, the holes are allowed to close and grow back together on their own, as opposed to an open incision that is sutured with disolving sutures and sometimes stapled on the exterior, or regular sutures, or even steri-tape that comes off eventually. I've had all three kinds of closures, with the incision lines over the top of the preceeding surgery.
The numb or weird sensation takes years to go away, if ever. The lump or bump could be a herniated incision opening, allowing muscle to protrude through another layer. Or it could be keloid formation-ropy scar tissue. Tell the Doc to leave your weight out of the equation and find out what is causing the lump and if there is anything that can be done for it at this time following the surgery on your kidney. I would think that your follow up CT should be able to "see" what is there.
You're asking some of the right people. Now advocate for yourself and find some answers.
Good Luck and Hugs

Hubby's belly bulge
Today is six weeks out of surgery for John. He has a scar about 18" long, from his right side past his navel. About half the length, across the top, is a bulge. He asked about it and was told it was just the muscle tissue, settled in place, until it heals and starts to support itself. It doesn't bother him with pain or anything, but you can see it when he wears any kind of shirt that clings to him, like cotton. It's probably not as bad as it would be if I didn't have him almost 40 lbs down on Keto because his belly doesn't bulge out on its own like it used to. He also has some numbness and weird feeling that wraps from his lower right back to his right groin. It doesn't hurt anymore, he said he just feels it, it feels different, some numb spots. He's used to some of the sensation already because he was robbed and stabbed on the Wank 20 years ago and it was in the same area as his RN scar.

thanks for sharing your story. No, I am not in New Orleans. I am in Georgia. Although I did live in the New Orleans area when I was a teenager.
