in Head and Neck Cancer #1

Nice to hear doctor say "you are getting better". Last recurrance was 2 years ago so scans will be every 6 mos not every 3 months (original cancer was 5 years ago). Original fistula now closed to interior of mouth. One still exists next to it but he feels that goes to old bone. Will address it when I have breast surgery done. In meantime, will start speech therapy again. He feels I can further improve speech with lots of hard work even though he says for the most part I am able to get my point across now. Being understood on the phone is still an issue for me as are some conversations. Thank goodness for texting and my Boogie Board! He opened the door to trying to take anything by mouth that I can with help of speech therapist. Fingers crossed that things really are getting better.

    That is wonderful news Candi. 

    For phone calls, check out SPRINTIP.com.  It is (or was - I haven't checked lately) the Missouri provide of relay telephone service.  Anyone can use it though.

    YOu have to sign up - and maybe provide a statement from your doctor that you have speech issues.  I never got asked for it.

    You use your computer or pad to make a call - you type, and and operator relays what you type to the place you are calling.  They do type back to you.

    If you have analog phone, you could use a hearing carry-over equipment you can get from Missouri - like a TTY I think, but you can hear the other person.

    Another option - is 711.  They operaters are trained to understand hard-to-understand people - like us - and help get your message across.

    All are great to help you make calls and be independent.

    Glad you are doing better and one of the fistulas closed. When they removed my larynx what helped me was I recorded my voice, one so I could just keep it, but also to see where I needed to over enunciate which lettere and words. Had to slow down my speach as well. The letter "T" was very hard for me, as B,P,and S. I think my wife thought I was crazy, [she might be right] I went around the house just talking to myself or the dog just so I could work on it. I an really good on the phone, but every so often, I get someone who just has no clue what I am saying. Sometimes it is just them.

    Being able to Speak

     

     

     

    I get very frustrated sometimes when people can’t understand what I am saying, and I find a lot of security guards mostly at Air Ports always think I and putting on an act or something, but after they read my letters from my doctors and feel-up my PEG tube they start to realized it’s the real thing. My wife was thinking of getting an (I pod) for me so I can wright what I am trying to say, so between Texting and I pod I should be ok.
