New patient with additional concerns of dvt, pe, and IVC filter

Hi! I'm a newly diagnosed patient scheduled for surgery 2/9/16. Not sure yet if it will be open or robotic it will depend on bleeding/ clotting issues. I have been on anti coagulant therapy for 9 yrs with no known cause for dvt and pe. I came off recently because it was thought I did not need them and developed a dvt within days. During the exam for the clotting my lesion was found so here I am preparing for surgery and more than a little scared of the IVC filter they are going to install and not knowing whether or not they will take out the entire kidney or just a portion. Anyone else had to deal with these additional concerns? They are talking about my staying in the hospital 4-5 days and then they want me to stay in the area another week to be close in case of any unforeseen issues. We live 5 hrs from a major hospital.

    Sorry to hear.  It must be quite scary! Did you get a second opinion? Are you dealing with an rcc specialist or at a cancer hospital?  Do you have a copy of the report or more details about the size?  The size and location determines if they take half or whole kidney.  You can join smartpatients.com they can help you more with your clotting issues i believe.  Wishing you all the best! As scary as it is, you will get through it.  There has been all kinds of situations on here and they get through it nicely. Hugs!

    Yes we got a second opinion

    Yes we got a second opinion. We are having the surgery at the huntsman cancer institute in Salt Lake City. The surgeon is a renal cancer specialist and highly regarded. No worries about that Part just all the complications of the blood clots. Thanks for your support!
