Scared Once Again

I had toncil cancer and am 3 years post treatments.  I just had a great check up that included a throat scope and was given a thumbs up, NED.  I even gradulated to 6 months between check ups.

Now I have a tender spot on the right side of my neck right under my jaw bone.  I don't find any swollen lymph nodes.  When I swollow, I feel the tender area as well as when in probe the area with my fingers.   I have no idea what this could be.  I sent my doctor an email about this tonight so I am sure that she will have me come in.

Have any of you experienced anything like this?  Do you think I should be concerned?  I am very worried. Just when I started feeling peace of mind due to the 3 year milestone, this comes up and now I am totally freaked out.

    thinking positive

    Joanielo,

    Once bitten, always a concern.

I am hoping it is nothing.  Like you said “3 years NED”.

    Good luck,

    Matt

    You did the right thing.

Keeping your doctor informed it the best thing. Now you just had a check up and it was NED. Now you feel something and most likely is just a lymph gland doing what they do, fight an infection. I had a small bump I could see and feel and most all my lymph glande have been removed. This was just on the border on level 1 and 2 come together and they did not do level 1. I was concerned but felt it was not cancerous as that grows so much slower, and this was just there and in two dayd it was gone again. Must have been a lymph gland and cleared up.  Yours is most likely the same. We will keep fingers cross, just because.

    It's very natural

to feel scared and worried. Contacting your doctor and having everything double checked will help alleviate your concerns. Having experienced cancer once, we are hyper aware of changes in health. You did the right thing, now hang on, breathe, and see what happens after your appointment. Here's wishing you a confirmed NED, and good health.

    Here....I'm dusting off

a ceiling fan blade for you, Joan...until you hear from your Dr.  It's probably nothing, but good that you contacted him.  Anything different or new from the shoulders up hits all of us on a nerve.

I have a feeling it's going to be alright....take three Ibuprophens, and see if it goes away.  I always figured if aspirin takes the pain away, it can't be cancer ;).

    Thank You...

My doctors says that this does not sound like a recurrence and that it sounds more like a muscle or swelling such as lymphedema.  She said that if I am concerned, come on in.

Since she isnt too concerned, I will give it a few more days and maybe it will go away.  I don't think she would stick her neck out there unless she is pretty sure it isnt a recurrence.  She is usually really encouraging to come in for any concern.

Thanks again for the support and encouragement everyone!  You guys have save me from a ton of stress over the years!

    Four years out from diagnosis

Four years out from diagnosis and treatment here, and have been moving along happily.   Felt my jawbone just under my ear and there it was.   A tender pea sized lump.  GREEEAAAATT.  Undecided

Going in for a CT scan this fine Saturday morning with my first bout of scanxiety in three years.

Better to be safe than sorry,  but how easily we can go from rock solid to scared.   Keeping positive, but can relate to that feeling.

Hope to add my role call info for 2016 with nothing but more NED news.

Keep on keeping on, brave warriors!

    Jen,

Be sure and let me know what you find out.   I am not convinced that my current issue is nothing to be concerned about.  It just doesnt feel quite right.  If mine still hurts next week, I am going to call and have my doctor check it out.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you to get good news.

    Hi Jen

    Hi Jen:

I am post TX now for about 5 months with a NED just before Christmas.  About 2 months ago, I noticed a lump in almost exactly the same area..felt like right around my salivary gland.  Within a week, it was horribly painful..it felt almost like a boil!  I had a quadroscopy booked already, so they biopsied this new development at the same time, expecting, as I was too, that this new lesion had to be another cancer cropping up.  The results were negative!  My ENT is not satisfied with that though and wants to book another biopsy, which will hopefully happen soon.  Right now, the pain from this is severe enough to take me from nearly off all pain medication to hydrocodone.  The lesion also seems to be growing, although with me hardly being able to open my mouth at all, it's very difficult to see it, and I have so much phlegm around there, that it's hard to even see with a scope.  The pain is right beside the jaw bone and up into my right ear.  Even develops into a terrible headache if I don't keep up on it with the meds.  I don't know if this helps or is something like you're describing, but I'd sure like to hear what your Dr.s have to say, as mine are in a real quandry as to what this could be.  Anyone else have any ideas?  Best of luck, Jen...thoughts and prayers are with you.

    NED

You know the saying. It's not cancer until it is proven. If your doctor is not worried, please try to ease your mind. Most HNC tumors don't feel tender, so it's likely something else. Give it a few more days and then make an apointment. Don

    Hi Joanielo

I am 14 year out from my first treatment and 12 years out from my second treatment for NPC. I have a lot of radiation damage to nerves and tissue in the sinus area and face on the left side. I still get very sore spots all over the neck, but I don’t worry about it because I know it is nothing. What I do worry about is if a small lump forms on the sore spot or anywhere on my neck that is when I call my ENT. But it never hurts if you are worried about it get your doctor to check it so you don’t get stressed-out about it.
