Update on my mother

I rarely ever post on this but ever since my mom was diagnosed in 2013, this forum has been so helpful for me to know that other ppl are fighting this battle and winning. Phrannie - you were such a source of information for us - i'm so sorry to hear about your recurrence but I know you will beat and FIGHT this beast. (FU CANCER!)

 

just wanted to give everyone an update on my mom, she was diagnosed sept 2013 with stage 4 nasopharyngeal cancer. scans were clear for a year and then showed a local recurrence in her sphenoid which they removed through endoscopic procedure and treated with 35 more rounds of radiation/cisplatin (though not as terrible as the first round). her last treatment for this recurrence was feb 2015. she's had two clean scans since then (thank god) but she's been experiencing pain in her shoulder (not related to movement) and feet int he morning, a bloody nose (once when she sneezed really hard) and cold hands. Im' hoping this is just a the flu since she got scoped 2 months ago and everything was fine. BLAH this emotional roller coaster really sucks. her MRI scan is this coming jan 2. can everyone keep her in your prayers and join me in praying for good news?

    Everything you are saying sounds about normal for someone with recurrence NPC, the radiation not only destroy the NPC cancer but affects the entire body. I have problems with my left shoulder and my left keen, if fact most of all my problems are all on the left side of my body. The bleeding on and off is also normal due to the damaged tissue in the sinus. The main thing is to watch for recurrence again, what I do for that is to drink bitter gourd juice daily it has worked for the last 10 years with me. Will keep her in my prayers for the up-coming MRI

    it wasn't anything! they ran her through an MRI and everything looked stable. we were just concerned bc she had the following symptoms: a) nosebleed, albeit just once b) Extreme weakness c) shoulder pain d) whole right side of face was swollen to the point where you couldn't see her eyes. apparently the radiation results in her being prone to infection so she somehow got an infection whih was likely caused by a tooth abscess. they put her on a week of antibiotics and she was good as new. what a roller coaster ride this beast is. every little symptom and we all fear the worst. it really makes you appreciate the time. thanks for all your support everyone, i love this website for the support it provides. you're all amazing and wonderful people. thank you.

    yes, it is quite a roller coaster ride. Like you, I'm glad we have the encouragement and support of folks here on the message board to help make it through the scarier parts of the ride.

    MRI

    You might find that bleeding will come and go, as with me I bleed off and on for months at a time then it heals and won’t bleed again for a few months. If she is like me the pain and numbness might be damage to the nerves from radiation, I find that Nucynta and Lyrica works for me better than any other pain or nerve medication. Now that this part of live is passed enjoy it, I thank God for everyday for waking up each morning, to me it is a blessing.

    Hi everyone !  I haven't posted since before Christmas with the good news of a NED, so Happy 2016 to you all!  I finished tx Radiation/cisplatin Sept. 1, 2015.  The radiation left me with a gaping cleft in my soft palate which makes eating a real struggle.  I can't wear my dentures any more, because of the pain.  I had a new lesion on the same side of my neck spring up in Nov., and it was biopsied and showed no cancer.  But the thing is still there!!!  It is so painful between my ear and salivary gland on that side, that it makes eating anything just about impossible.  The Drs. seem to think I should just be grateful that is isn't cancer and get on with it..bit I just can't.  I am supposed to be fitted with an opterator soon so help with my eating and speech, but there is no way I could even go for the fitting with this pain.  I am taking more pain killers now that when I was in treatment (toradol and morphine) and I'm just not getting any answers.  We tried a series of antibiotics in case it was an infection of the salivary glands or something, but no luck.  Anyone have any idea what this could be, or are they right and I should just try and get on with it?  Thanks everyone...looking forward to any input you may have.
