Medical MJ

We haven't discussed this topic in a while. It's like keeping skeletons in the closet or having a strange uncle Stanley that no one talks about. I haven't talked about it much because I never wanted to jeopardize my status with my doctors, my care givers, and insurance. However, medical mj is available here in Ct. I have a dispencery only 3-4 miles away from home. In a couple weeks I have an appt with a palliative care physician. If things go according to plan, then it will become legal for me to carry and use pot to aleviate symptoms.

Last winter when I was so sick I was almost catatonic when I was awake. A couple hits later I'd be able to get up, walk around, and eat. It was like a miracle how much it helped get me back on my feet. And the process has continued. The effects are always consistant, predictable, and immediate. Appetite improves, activity increases, nausea controlled. It is so much different from the college days of smoking , putting on headphones, and listening to Hendrix. I am totally functional. My golf game actually improves. Besides when I hit the ball hard, all the stars and colors are AWESOME! Just kidding.

In any event, the cat is out of the baggie, er, bag.

Not that there's anything wrong with that ;) Seriously, if it's helping you, go for it. Anything that relieves symptoms and makes you function better, I'm all for. Wish the rest of the states got over their paranoid fears about "gateways."

Love you Fox... You are hitting on subjects that I wonder about quite a bit lately... I am so happy you are outgoing enough to be front and center about "hidden" topic of Marijauna... please don't laugh if I can't spell it... I barely can SAY it outloud.

I have had awful times with the nausea, I am on Sutent for 18 months, and then I got a 78 day vacation from my drug, so I could recover from an entire summer of  nausea queasy stomach do not want to even SMELL food let alone eat it.  I felt so great, and had NOT one side effect for 60 of those 78 days.... Loved it.  Nov. scans showed small progression of mets, so i am now back on schedule of Sutent, and am beginning the nausea all over.  I was floored by which people came to me with their medical mj little vapor cigarette things, and offered to teach me how to use it...... claiming how it helps them, for "their painful knees, or hips" or whatever ailment. After I try so hard to not fall flat on the floor, I have thanked them greatfully for the offer... explaining how I just am not ready until I talk to my doctor, and learn how etc. etc.

I did check in Oregon during the summer how a person could get a mj license... it costs $250 for the medical mj license according to their website. Then I would have to find a MD for the perscription.  Then find the dispensary.  I don't know what kind, strength, method of taking.. just nothing. Now I understand Oregon has just okayed it for recreational use, so no license needed.

However, I digress, we live in California for 8 months of the year, so the Oregon route does not pertain.  California does have medical mj use so they tell me.

Anyhow Fox.. where does one begin the search?  How do you know what "brand" to buy? How do I know it is the medical stuff, not the recreational stuff? How do I want to use it.. little vaporizer cigarette holders.. what?

I avoid eating, regular size portion food when the nausea begins.. like a turtle I tuck my head in and lay down not even wanting to move in case I start barfing.. is that something that would go away with marijauna use?

Sorry for being so long... but once I start.....

    Pam

    But Pam,

you're on a Harley. A product of the counter culture. I guess we have been to quite different biker parties. Seriously, I think you are in the minority on this subject. That's refreshing to hear. I never brought the subject up with my doctor. She suggested it. I never discussed the subject for many reasons. Mainly not wanting to jeopardize my status as a patient in the eyes of MDs, insurance, maybe even drug trials. But now that my cancer center is being open about it, I'll participate.

Pam, pot is similar to alcohol in that there are different strains and concentrations of the potent ingredient. But for people who purchase pot in the black market, usually the only choice you get is the one he is selling. These new dispenceries do have more of a choice.

For a new consumer with no experience smoking pot, I would suggest staying away from the "good" stuff. That's because the effects on your brain take a while to learn to deal with. It's one thing to laugh uncontrollably at twenty and immature. You may not like that feeling as a responsible adult in her 60's. Perceptions change, time slows, and loss of concentration and forgetting what you were talking about happens. Operating machinery can be hazardous. But I guarantee you will also forget about your nausea and not only will you want to eat, EVERYTHING tastes AWESOME!

So why don't you try it with someone you know and trust. They will explain whats happening. If you like it, persue it with your doctor then. Everything else you need to know is on the internet. Pot does not interfere with our cancer medicine. Different biochemistry. So don't worry about that as a risk.

Jan, I have no experience with oils or vaping or anything else people are doing. However, I've known many who smoked pot for their neuromuscular disorders to reduce spasticity.

I receive a presription from my ONC for marinol it is a little brown pill that contains the THC, what is nice is I don't have to smoke it and irritate my lungs.  Instead I take a pill before I go to bed and right before my Votrient.  I find I sleep so much better, usually the whole night uninterrupted and I have very little issues with nausea now.  My appatite has not changed but I have to admit I do feel better when taking the Votrient.

It was voted to be made legal in MD but I think its dying in committees. Anyway there is no action and its still legal. Also seems a bit stupid to smoke anything when I've got mets in my lungs. And one cannot live on hash brownies alone (isnt that in the bible or somewhere). Anyway, Ive had no side effects to speak of on Avastin - I just hope its working. I guess I'll find out next week. Scan on Monday, hopefully results on Tuesday

    Yeah, but it's not my

Yeah, but it's not my Harley... All the counter culture stuff is my youngest son (he's 41) a few of my first four kids imbibed and went thru addiction with drugs and alcohol... my youngest, the Harley kid let me ride two summers ago... and I love it... could ride all day ...

I realize I am pretty uneducated, and that's just it.  When we lived at Hamilton Air Force Base housing, I signed up to be a chaperone at my oldest son's first co-ed party at the base youth group ... they made me bathroom monitor. I figured all I would have to watch out for was a spitball fight or something... at the orentation I was showed how to put out grass fires fast outside the bathroom windows (last bad drought in the late 70's then) if the kids threw out cigaretts... and to let a supervisor know if the smoke was marijauna (it was a US Air Force Base after all they said) ... when I said "it smells? like what" ... they just had me watch kids dance. My first set of kids still laugh today, and they tell me, I was the most clueless, never believe bad stuff Mom on the base. A couple of them tought me a lot as they grew up over the next few years, and if nothing else, I learned what it smelled  like.

"good " stuff..laughing, responsible adult in her 60's, time slows (sounds good) loss of concentration (like that would be new) and forgetting what I am talking about ( been doing that on chemo !)  if that could be side effects, does not sound serious to me. I guess a conversation with my MD is on my list next.

I really thank you for everyone's imput. Got a lot to figure out.

    Pam

    MJ candy

    Footstomper,

Some legal dispensers sell candy laced with pot - so you don't have to limit yourself to brownies. I haven't experienced any of this myself but I have friends in Colorado who have eaten Gummy Bear-type MJ candies and squares of chocolat-type candies. They say they are quite potent - half a Gummy Bear does the trick. And it doesn't kick in right away like a toke on a joint would. You wait 10-20 minutes.

    Nt an option for me.

There is some evidence that it could help my neuropathic pain...but I live in Virginia, where it is not an option.  Furthermore, my job requires a periodic federal background investigation, andthat would not look kindly on it (marajauna is still against federal law).  I think if it was an option I would try it.   I mean, it can't be worse than Gabapentum or Lyrica which turned me into a babbling idiot.

    I forgot

about being on gabapenten. As a matter of fact the side effects of so many medications are terrible. Gaba made me weak, nuts and didn't help my neuro deterioration at all. Glad I forgot about it.

I was exposed to pot like most teens and college kids in the 60's -and 70's. But it's use and purpose is entirely different now. For example, yesterday we had company. And I felt sick all afternoon. After they left, I was vomiting. So I had a few tokes and all my sickness was gone! 15 minutes later I fired up the grill and cooked a steak. It was the best thing I've eaten in weeks. I am also less sick to my stomach if there is something in it. The munchies are a little bit of heaven.

As Pam asked, recreational use and medicinal pot maybe the same thing but the intent of using it for nausea vs. getting stoned is quite different.

If I think about the damage that has been done to my body by cancer, Il-2, votrient and well over 30 ct scans, whatever risks are involved with mj use are absolutely insignificant. I've talked about how the thought of cancer never leaves your head like having a song stuck in there. But the comforting effect of a couple hits does allow me to enjoy anything I do. Golf, yard work, playing guitar, bicycling to name a few. My motorcycle is off limits. I have no issue driving my car.

I guess here is where I say that I am not in favor of pot being available to live a Cheech and Chong lifestyle. But our situation is so much different. Last year I was living on oxies because of my intense pain. Every dr. visit I said, "And people take these for a good time?" No thank you. I hope I never need "real" medicine again.

    Hi Fox,

I have to agree with everything you have stated about the affects of MJ. I notice the same, makes the neusea go away almost immediately, improves appetite, makes food taste better. I am hoping they get medical MJ here is Wisconsin soon.

    1/2 a Gummi Bear?

Takes 20 mintes to kick in? Does it last for hours? Sounds more like LSD!
