Prevention regiment after high-grade dysplasia.
Hi all,
I've had Crohn's disease for 16 years now, and after a routine colonoscopy last revealed probable high-grade dysplasia, my GI guy recomended a total colonectomy with out the option of a j pouch (due to the likelihood of Crohns manifesting in the pouch). I couldn't bear the idea of that, so I elected against it. Naturally I'm looking at any supplements or lifestyle changes that y'all can recommend. So far I've reduced my meat consumption, and I supplement with a mushroom extract, fiber therapy, a daily blueberry/raspberry smoothie, and tumeric supplement. What else would you do if you were in my situation?

Hi
I have no experience with Crohn's disease, but feel certain that your doctor could recommend a dietition who could help you with your intake.
As a result of rectal cancer I have a colostomy. Others on here have an iliostomy. If you need to consider either in the future, I recommend you read:
The Ostomy Book: Living Comfortably with Colostomies, Ileostomies, and Urostomies
Barbara Dorr Mullen and Kerry Anne McGinn RN BSN OCN
It certainly helped me.

Either way is a hard decision: living with your existing condition and possible worsening or living without the entire large intestine are no good option. That's a personal decision you have to make with the guidance of your doctors.
I have been living with a colostomy for 2 years now and I do take all kinds of supplements, some that you mentioned yourself. The only thing I could recommend is the Yerba Mate tea, just make sure it is note smoked.
I wish you good luck,
Laz

D3, LEF
I'd definitely check my 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels, so many here have had disasterously low levels that required substantial vitamin D3 (and K2) supplementation, like 5000-10,000 iu per day or even more. Again, guided by before and after blood tests for vitamin D levels.
We used the the Life Extension Foundation protocols for preventing colon cancer recurrence, as a starting point for supplement formulation. Should you change your mind about surgery, we also used the LEF.org recommendations on surgery.
