Husband had his surgery yesterday.

And it went well. It was such a long day though. I don't think I was fully prepared for how long of a day it would be. Surgery was at 7:30 am, and he was done by 11 am. I didn't see him until about 3 pm. The doctor removed all of the tongue cancer (including margins, it ended up being about 1/3 of the right side of the oral tongue). The doctor and the pathologist looked at the tumor slice by slice under a microscope in the operating room to be sure they got all of the cancer out, and they are confident that they did. The doctor also removed all of the lymph nodes on the right side of the neck, even though he said there is only 1 he is suspicious about. The final pathology report will come back in a week, and our follow up appt with the doctor is on the 12th.

We are hoping my husband will come home today, and the doctor said they would release him if they are happy with his food intake. Yesterday, he ate 2 servings of ice cream, 1 bowl of jello, 2 bowls of cream of chicken soup, water, and cranberry juice. He is ordering soft scrambled eggs and applesauce and jello for breakfast. Any other recs? Do you think he is eating enough? He really wants to come home today and not tomorrow.

i had to come home last night because we have kids, and I wanted to at least see them, but I am heading back today to the hospital to be with my husband. I hope I can bring him home today.

i know he feels good that the cancer is out though!!!!

    all's well

    swopoe,

All sounds good.  My stay following neck and tongue surgery was very brief and with more discomfort than pain.

I am glad they found clear margins, which is very promising.

    Good luck.

Glad he came through it so well....

Glad to hear he is able to eat. I had to go 9 days without. The recovery can be a little slow so just be ready, he went through a lot but is doing so well.

    Surgery

It's good to hear your husband is doing well and that the surgeon got the entire tumor. I will pray recovery is quick so he can get back to normal soon. As far as nutritional needs, did anyone suggest smoothies or Ensure?

the surgery went well and the doctor is confident about the margins. That is GREAT news. Try to get some rest yourself also. Keep us posted...we'll keep the prayers and good vibes coming!

    Alright!!

They are confident they got it all....WHOO HOO!!  I know it's relief to know that your body is packing no more cancer.....it's a real weight to carry on one's shoulders.

If he doesn't get home today....well, he'll be home tomorrow.....and that'll be here soon!

    Good results

All sounds like it went well. I am always anxious to get out of hospital and home but have realized it's not good to rush it.

Tired and sore but home. Thank you for the well wishes. Seeing the doctor next week on Mon and Thurs morning. Now I get to play nurse to my husband. Wouldn't have it any other way. <3
