    radiation burns

how many weeks of treatment did you have? Which dose?

When dd you notice the burns start?

I am worried. I don't know what to do.. I heard vit e before...

Doc says lotion each day which is done, but still have 11 more treatments to 5400 g/dose.

    Old Posts

I think it would be better to ask this as a new question on a new post.   This post is nearly 4 years old and more than likely there is better options today.

It is always better to inquire from your radiation nurse/technician on what to use on your burns.  You want the best available today, not 4 years ago.

I had burns in my neck and the radiology department gave me something for the burns.  I've used vitamin E as a liquid on inverse psoriasis and it did absolutely nothing.

    Good luck to you, Heidi.

    Heidi,  Doris is right about

Heidi,  Doris is right about the information and the best tools changing.  I had chest rads (44 rounds 2x/day) in april 2011.  I was pink o the first day, but little to no burning all the way through.  The rads onc recommended to have the area pristine clean for each treatment, then I put on aloe in the changing room, Eucerin daily lotion throughout the day, and aquaphor by Eucerin overnight.  Someone here recommended plain men's t shirts/no bra to wear...very soft, not irritating, good coverage for the sun, and good rags or trash when you are all done.  I wore them and it worked really well for me.

I did get a rads rash, the doc gave me a lidocaine ointment to use.  It worked well at stopping the itch, but not for very long with each application.

I also had whole brain radiation in the fall of 2012.  I had the same rads onc, this time they recommended calundula ointment (without alcohol).  It certainly worked better in my case.  I didn't even have pink until a week or so after it was all over.  When I reapplied the calendula at that time, the pink went away very quickly.  It's available at Whole Foods and most natural food stores.  I thought it was a little on the expensive side, but definitely worth it.

One tip, ask exactly where to put the creams.  How far around your side?  How far across the midline?  Up the neck, and toward the belly button?  You don't want to miss a section because they weren't clear on where to apply.

Another tip (guess I can't count any more)...drink lots of water.  It's important to help your skin handle the rads, and flush the rads out of your system.  It will also help to battle the fatigue.

    I hope this helps.

    Hugs,

    Linda

Old posts are now popular to go to!

Unfortunately  old threads have become popular to pull up recently.  4 yrs is a lot more recent than most are pulling up.

    Going through rads...
I used an Aloe cream as well as the aquaphor. They worked great. The one thing to remember, and I am sure your dr has told you, is to stay out of the sun while ungoing treatment. I was told to wear a wide brim hat and long sleeves if I wanted to go outside. I was also very tired after treatment, so I slept a lot. I liked to take a lukewarm bath after my nap, it was very relazing, and it helped my body to not feel so tight.

    Wish you well.

    Emu oil

I blistered from the radiation to my breast. I used emu oil and fresh aloe from a plant I got at Walmart. Once the blisters resolved I applied a combination of a very thick Vitamin E oil and Geranium essential oil. I have almost no scaring. The emu oil was very soothing.

Every day, as soon as I got

Every day, as soon as I got home from radiation, I sat on my bed with a bowl of ice water that I dipped a washcloth in and then wrung it out. I laid the cloth over my breast and held it there with a pillow until it didn't feel cool any more. Dipped it back in the ice water, wrung it out, and repeated. I spent about an hour doing this each time. I could jest feel the heat being drawn out. Then I applied the cream they gave me. They urged me to apply the cream several times a day, but NOT within four hours prior to the radiation treatment. Mine were at 2 pm, so I could apply in the morning, after radiation, and again at bedtime, It's kind of like when you realize you've spent too much time in the sun and you're trying to stave off a sunburn.

I only had 15 sessions, and I had no burning or blistering. The skin got a little pink, but that was all. About two weeks after I finished radiation, the nipple on that side peeled the way your skin does after a sunburn.

A friend of a friend went through radiation and she put me onto the cold washcloth thing. Worked for me.

I know this is "old thread"

I know this is "old thread" ,but seeing these comments, just had to post. What "type" of radiation therapy did /do you have? Tomorrow is gonna be day 21 of IMRT, while my fatigue is kickin' my butt-I do have MS-so just intensified it!! But,knock wood,no "real bad burns" (yet?) Looks like starting get a slight rash, almost like breaking out. It would b great if this is bad as it gets. Smile

    Breast Cancer Radiation Burns

Finished 16 rounds of radiation to left breast. Now 2 weeks after skin is peeling and in the breast fold horrible blisters. Was reading through an old forum. Just wondering if anyone had a good solution, Got a prescription for a $50 cream, there has to be something better. They burn us why do they not automatically have cream or whatever available. So tired of it all.

    Radiation burns

    50$......

2 weeks ago, I had my last treatment of proton beaming on my face in Japan and asked the same question for my second degree burn. The medical team strongly advised to use Vaseline. In their 18 years of operation it had the best track record scarless healing.

My radiation oncologist ordered something called My Girls on line. It worked beautifully. Good luck.
