Pill crusher
I'm starting a new topic just short and sweet. Get a pill crusher and a pot of jelly. Twist the crusher tightly put the powder in a little jelly on a spoon ( jam in uk) and place it on your tongue then have a sip of drink through a straw to wash it back, no more gagging on pills.

Used the jelly trick
To mask the very bitter theophylline pills my children took in powder form for their asthma when they were small.
Worked like a charm!
Guess a spoon full of sugar really can help as long as it is in jelly form!

Applesauce
Diabetics might want to try unsweetened applesauce. I put my gigantic potassium pill in a medicine cup with a little water and stir in the applesauce. It works with other pills too, but check with the pharmacist to be sure it's okay to dissolve. Capsules are often time-release and should not be dissolved.

very good point as usualdonfoo said:be careful
This is a fine idea as long as the medication is not time release. Whether a pill or capsule, make sure it is not time release if you are crushing.
very good point as usual Don.

Time release.Hondo said:Hi Jackie
That is what I do too but I make it go down the lady PEG tube. You need to be careful with doing this as some medicine will tell you not to crush them or break them in half because they are time release.
Thanks
Tim
The time release are usually capsules full of little round balls. I open these put in the jam and swallow. The little balls are...I believe...the time release. The balls dissolve at different rates. The capsule shell desolves releasing all the little balls same way as your doing by taking off the outside shelL, and swallowing in jam. I don't crush the little balls they are small enough to swallow, or go down the tube. I may be wrong so don't take my word

Protonix tablets can be taken with or without food. Protonix oral granules should be taken 30 minutes before a meal.
Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. Swallow it whole. It is like a time release. It does tell you to crush it for a GI tube.
To give Protonix granules through a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube:
-
Attach a 60-milliliter syringe to the NG tube and remove the plunger. Hold the syringe high enough to prevent any bends in the tube.
-
Empty the Protonix granules into the syringe barrel and mix in 2 teaspoons of apple juice.
-
Add 2 more teaspoons of apple juice to the syringe to rinse the granules through. Tap or shake the syringe as the juice empties into the tube.
-
Rinse with 2 teaspoons of apple juice at least twice more to make sure there are no granules remaining in the syringe or NG tube. They say to only use apple juice.

I wonder what it is with apple juice, my son had kidney stones and went to an alternative doctor. He was told to drink as much apple juice as he could every day and eventually the stones dissolved and passed through
