Pathology report recieved

in Kidney Cancer #1

I had my partical nephroctomy 10 days ago where they successfully removed a 3cm renal cell carcinoma.  I was kucky that this was caught pretty early on a catscan.

The report states pT1a which I undertand is the best case scenario.  For the grading though, it says G2.  Can anyone explain the grading system, please?

    Grade

    G2 is Grade 2 - which refers to the aggressiveness of the cancer.  I'm not 100% sure - but I think it's on a scale of 1-4, with 4 being the most aggressive.  I had a Grade 1 (Stage 1) which is the least aggressive type of RCC.  I believe G2 is pretty low on the aggressive scale - but I'd verify with your Dr.  It sounds like your cancer was caught early - and being on the low end of the "stage" and "grade" - its likely that all you will need is this one surgery to take care of it.  Although there are no guarantees - it sounds like your chances of reoccurance are relatively low.

    So, relax and recovery.

    It's a good pathology report,congrats, stage 1 is the least dangerous one and grade two is considered as low grade and not agrressive one.what is the sub type of your rcc? Is it clear cell?

    Yes.  It is clear cell renal cell carcinoma.  I understand that this is the most common one?

    Yes and because of that the

    Path Report Siblings

    Nielk,

     

    Yours and my reports are nearly identical. I had a 2.8cm, clear cell, grade 2. This is a very good report. 

     

    The grading system has to do with how easy it is for the pathologist to see the cells under a microscope. Grade 1 cells are very similar to regular cells and Grade 4 cells are very different. This is usually an indicator as to the aggressiveness of the cancer cells. 

     

    My doctor explained it to me like this: he said imagine grade 1 and 2 going hand in hand and grade 3 and 4 go hand in hand. The only difference is how closely they follow you. If the cancer had been a grade 3 or 4, they may have done a yearly MRI or CT scan rather than just the ultrasound. 

     

    But this is about as good as it get, with it still being cancer. So take a deeeeeep breath.

    You will qlso want to check if your report says clear margins, or negative margins.

    I'm surprised that some of the new people on this board haven't used more web searches to find out the info they are seeking.

    ACS has a site that will give you all the diagnostic info for Staging, and what the letters and numbers mean.  Go go www.cancer.org/cancer/kidneycancer and you'll find what you need.

    Or just do a web search of Kidney Cancer Staging and other sites will be listed.

    It's also important to understand that they always go wtih the higher grade if there are a certain number of those cells present in various path samples. So even if yours were predominantly 1s, if there were enough 2s then you're a grade 2. They explained to me that mine could have been interpreted as a grade 2 by some pathologist but the one who did it settled on grade 3 because of the presence of those cells along with the 2s. It doesn't mean all the cells were 2s (for you) or 3s (for me), etc.
