Meeting Surgeon Tomorrow - Left Kidney Cancer
Hello to all:
I am new here. I was diagnosed last week and will see a surgeon tomottow. I feel like I have a million questions, but when I try to get my thoughts together, I freeze.
I will more than likely have a partial nephrectomy. Any suggestions as to what questions might be beneficial to ask. I am sure I was told the size and location of the cancer, but for the life of me I do not remember what was told to me.
I appreciate any information and will keep all of you dear folks in my thoughts and prayers as you go through your own journey.
Thank you = Nancy

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago
Write down your questions and make a copy to give to who you take to your appt. you can both write down the answers. If you want copies of your reports, ask. I was able to have copies of labs, ct reports, etc. through an online system available through the hospital system and you might be able to get that. Ask got written pre-op instructions. They will probably have it any way but mine were complicated so I liked having it in writing. Good luck!

Hi Nancy,
I had my left kidney removed on July 6th and am doing pretty well. the questions I wish I would have asked are about diet and restrictions afterward. Best of luck to you and speedy healing.
Melanie
I asked this question, the answer was to reduce the salt from my diet as much as possible and also have less red meat and drink load of water to help the remaining kidney, and for the cancer it's best to omit suger, proccesed foods, additional colors in foods. Alcohol isn't recommended. Fruits and vegtable with antioxidans can help your imune sytem to fight cancerous cells too.

Thank you for this information. Looks like I will have to re-think my current eating habits, which include all of the things we should avoid.

Diet etc...
Hello Nancy,
How did the appointment go?
For the diet, my husband was also asked to avoid excess of salt and protein, to protect the remaining kidney. In your case, if it's a partial, I assume that is less important, but still good to keep the kidney function optimal I guess. Same goes for drinking lots of water.
My husband now also tries to eat lots of fruit, nuts, seeds with antioxydants, but quite honestly, he still continues with the sugar and alcohol as before (which was not in excess anyway).
I personally think it's always a balance between eating healthy, but also still enjoying life even if a glass of wine and a pack of american chocolate cookies is part of that ;-)
All the best!

Nancy,
The fact that you are being considered for a partial suggests that you tumor is on the smaller side and the surgery may in fact be a total cure. I had my Neph 13 lucky years ago at a than young 59 and so far so good. They were not doing partials then. Welcome again to the club which no one in their right mind would volunter to join.

I've got to admit that neither one of those things are responsible for my cancer. So I pretty much live the same way as always. All changes that I have made are due to the effects of my treatments. Votrient really messes with digestion and elimination so as a result I can't eat as much as I would like or need. The good news is that I am back at my high school weight. How many can say that? How many would really want to?
